  3. 'The lads did really well'published at 23:08 British Summer Time 11 June 2021

    Turkey 0-3 Italy

Here's a bit more from Italy coach Roberto Mancini: "We have played many teams that have done what Turkey did this evening. They put everyone (back) there, give you little space and make it hard for you to score.

"But the lads had patience. We waited, kept playing, tried to get that goal, then we got it. The lads did really well.

"The first half wasn't straightforward and in a game like that, even if they (Turkey) put everyone back, if you give one (goal) away on the break, the game changes," he added.

  4. Finland's Euro party that was decades in the makingpublished at 23:03 British Summer Time 11 June 2021

As well as Wales versus Switzerland, the rest of tomorrow's games also look good with the world number one Belgium rounding off the day against Russia.

Sandwiched in the middle is a game that promises to be intriguing as dark horses Denmark face debutants Finland.

The Finns have had to endure some heart-breaking moments during their long wait to reach a major men's tournament. including quite possible the most farcical own goal you will ever see.

I wrote an article about their near misses, so this is just an excuse to plug it really. Have a read here.

A good result tonight for Wales? You'd expect Italy to be strong so to see Turkey so poor against them should be some encouragement for the Welsh.

They begin their Group A campaign tomorrow against Switzerland.

  7. 'They are all stars'published at 22:49 British Summer Time 11 June 2021

    Micah Richards
Former Man City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Italy have got quality everywhere. These are all stars to me. We say there's no stars, but that's doing them a disservice to be honest. I'm not getting too excited. I sent Mancini a little good luck message before the game and he sent me a love heart back.

I was doing my revision before the game and all these players that people don't know too much about, you don't go unbeaten in 28 games without being a good team. How Mancini has managed to galvanise this squad without the old names, I think he's got off to a great start.

When it clicked, the Italian attack was sublime.

It's now 28 goals they have scored and none conceded in their last nine games.

  9. 'The coach has created a great group'published at 22:40 British Summer Time 11 June 2021

    Turkey 0-3 Italy

Italy forward Lorenzo Insigne: "Our strength is the group; the coach has created a great group in which there are no starters and bench players and each one of us is always ready to sacrifice for our teammates. Winning is the most important thing – if I score, even better. It was a great night."

In every national team, sometimes you need a transition and sometimes they are bigger than others and I think Mancini has realised that and he's done very well.

He's given chances to younger players to players that before they were dreaming to play for the national team.

You can see it at the end of the game. They are all together and you feel it, they are friends and they want to play for each other. Also they have a lot of quality, tactical ability and intelligence. They've got a lot.

Ashley Burton: Great performance from Italy. A marker to everyone else. Better all over and not tested at the back. I'm sure Turkey will be better against Wales and Switzerland.

WorldCupMatty: Excellent 2nd half performance from Italy. Impressive in every area - Chiellini, Spinazzola and Barella men of the match for me. Very disappointed in Turkey, weren’t in the game at all.

Italy coach Roberto Mancini: "We played well. With it being the first match, it wasn't easy and we were against a good team.

"The crowd helped us, and it was crucial for us to move the ball quickly."

Italy striker Ciro Immobile: "We showed patience in the first half.

"Turkey are a strong side and caused problems for many top teams. We tried to tire them out, moving the ball left and right and trying to spread them. Unfortunately, we regularly struggled to break their wall."

  14. 'Mancini deserves huge credit'published at 22:21 British Summer Time 11 June 2021

    Turkey 0-3 Italy

    Micah Richards
Former Man City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

People will go over the top but you want the first game to be a bang and we certainly got that. Not only the players but the manager deserves huge credit for installing that confidence in the players.

We always laugh and joke about the relationship I've had with Mancini but he gave me that belief in myself. He said if you're willing to improve and be the best you can be, I will help you and guide you in the way you want to go, as long as you are prepared to work hard.

You saw all the players today were not only very good in possession but you see in key areas two or three players pressing the ball high and we don't often see Italian sides doing that.

  15. 'Turkey made to look poor'published at 22:16 British Summer Time 11 June 2021

    Turkey 0-3 Italy

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

Turkey were poor, they were made to look poor.

They had nowhere to go when they had the ball but that was because the way the Italians pressed them.

Turkey had to rely on that many men to get back and defend when they got the ball back they just had to get it forward.

Roberto Mancini has changed the style of play, teams will look at the way they play and look to exploit that.

Italy were a mess when he took over.

  16. Chiellini - still got itpublished at 22:13 British Summer Time 11 June 2021

Giorgio Chiellini was loving life out there tonight, getting forward for attacks and making massive blocks like the one above.

Thirty six and looking as good as ever.

I completely disagree that England would beat this Italy team. England are good but far too much about individuals, Italy are a good balance of experience and new talent and it shows they work well together.

    Peter Devon

Watching Italy shows you why England will never win a major tournament: we just can't compete with the diving/screaming/conning the opposition into putting the ball out of play. No right calling themselves sportsmen.

    Turkey 0-3 Italy

    Cesc Fabregas

We could see Chiellini sometimes near the box. He had some shots when he recovered the ball because he was so high up the pitch.

For this reason if they attack behind Chiellini, especially, I think on the left hand side because Spinazzola is so high up.

I think they can have problems with a better team.

Italy executed today in terms of a tactical perspective and individually too, you saw their togetherness after the game. If the spirit wasn't there to see, it is now.

Flawless. You can never write off Italy. They had a great qualifying campaign and they came into this game with such confidence and they deserved that tonight. After 50-60 minutes Turkey had no legs left and Italy totally dominated the game from start to finish.
