  1. 'Full backs are Croatia's weakest link'published at 14:58 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England 0-0 Croatia

    Alex Scott
Former England and Arsenal defender on BBC One

The more the game went on you could see we had a brilliant start with the tempo, but then Croatia started to figure out what England were doing, where we were being dangerous.

Both full backs for Croatia are their weakest link and we need to exploit that.

When you look at the first half this team have done a great job. In the second half we can bring on fresh legs like a Grealish to get in those pockets and exploit the full-backs.

  2. 'Mings loves to defend his box'published at 14:58 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England 0-0 Croatia

    Frank Lampard
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Tyrone Mings is a defender who likes to defend his box and he loves doing that. When the ball is arriving in the box he finds himself in the right position and he's happy to go and compete with anything.

Two of those were classed as being on target. Phil Foden was mightily close to breaking the deadlock, wasn't he?

  4. 'Phillips has been dangerous'published at 14:56 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    HT: England 0-0 Croatia

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

There was a big question mark going into the game about England's formation. It's the three in midfield, how they have shaped up, with Declan Rice at the base allowing Mason Mount and Kalvin Phillips to pick their moments to jump out of that formation to press. Phillips has got licence to run beyond Harry Kane and he has been dangerous at doing that.

Simon Ward: Watching England struggle with another really poor set piece, really makes you wonder why Ward-Prowse is not in this team again...

Peter Young: Phillips has done okay. But in that formation and that position, it should be Grealish, surely.

Henry: Started so brightly... But we've all seen this second half before, right? At least this can't go to penalties.

  6. 'Modric can still do the business'published at 14:55 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England 0-0 Croatia

    Frank Lampard
Former England midfielder on BBC One

We were waiting for Modric to get on the ball but he couldn't because of the way England were playing and how they were pressing.

It was inevitable that couldn't continue and he was going deeper and deeper to try and force the play and get on the ball and he did that. He showed one or two bits of quality as a little reminder that he can still go out there and do the business.

  8. 'Phillips the standout player'published at 14:53 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England 0-0 Croatia

    Micah Richards
Former Man City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was interesting to see Kalvin Phillips' position.

In that 25 minute period [when England were on top] he was trying to get between the lines and he was pressing high.

He has been the standout player for me in that first half.

  10. Big impact off the bench?published at 14:51 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    HT: England 0-0 Croatia

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

This is about taking your moments when they come. England have had a couple of sniffs here and there but the substitutes will have a huge impact on this game I am sure.

  11. 'England went after Croatia'published at 14:50 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England 0-0 Croatia

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

Very impressed. I wanted England to go after Croatia in the first 10-15 minutes and they did exactly that. They pressed, the passed with pace. There was an energy about their game.

That would be my only worry, everything has been very good other than when we were on top I was expecting that goal.

  12. Croatia looking comfortablepublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England 0-0 Croatia

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

England started in a real hurry but once Croatia settled the game was played very much at their pace.

  13. 'Heat has taken its toll'published at 14:48 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England 0-0 Croatia

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

The heat has taken its toll on England. The first 10 minutes were a bit scrappy but then it seemed a matter of time before England hit the net.

Croatia came back into it and then it just got a bit scrappy again towards the end of the first half.

Kalvin Phillips has been caught offside more times on his Euro 2020 bow (once), which is 45 minutes old than he was in 30 games across all competitions for Leeds last season.

The England midfielder is also the only player to complete every pass in the first half 18/18.

Mark: This was very predictable. England need Grealish on to start picking up the ball in midfield and making things happen.

    Owen: Set kettle to: "ON"

After a really bright start, we have fallen back to our old ways and not taking the game to opposition..

Kris Jefferson: England just far too slow on the ball when transitioning, we just had a 5 minute period of passing it back and forth between midfield and defence, with little movement off the ball. Meaning we inevitably have to just go with a long ball which can easily be cut out.

Jerry: We started so brightly. Now a lot of sidewards and backwards passing. It doesn't matter if there's goal. It matters though that their levels have dropped.

He thought it was close Kieran Trippier with his hands on his head. It's a really strong wall, otherwise that finds the back of the net.
