Spain endured a frustrating opening game in Euro 2020 as they failed to make their near total dominance pay against a rigid and stubborn Sweden in Seville.

Luis Enrique's side had the vast majority of possession and territory in the match, which at times resembled a session of attack versus defence, but were unable to take advantage of the good opportunities their build-up play yielded.

They finished the match with 917 passes, 85% possession - and no goals.

  2. 'Spain missing a No 9'published at 22:43 British Summer Time 14 June 2021

    Karen Carney
Former England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

If 10 passes was a goal, how far ahead would Spain be? I keep thinking about Belgium and Romelu Lukaku.

A number nine that is in red hot form is all Spain is missing. They have everything bar that centre forward.

  3. 'Give Sweden credit'published at 22:42 British Summer Time 14 June 2021

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC One

We've got to give Sweden great credit, their energy has been great, they've stayed organised and they've frustrated Spain.

  4. 'This is all Spain have got'published at 22:41 British Summer Time 14 June 2021

    FT: Spain 0-0 Sweden

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's quite clear that Sweden knew the weaknesses of Spain.

A lot of things Spain did were wonderful, there were lovely triangles in midfield and out wide with the full-backs, but then eventually when they had to make the last pass that didn't happen often enough.

So it was very frustrating because this is it, this is all Spain has got, this is what we will see for the next two games.

  5. 'Shocking finishing'published at 22:40 British Summer Time 14 June 2021

    FT: Spain 0-0 Sweden

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

Sweden worked their socks off. They had a chance or two themselves to nick it but Spain only have themselves to blame, they created enough chances. The reason they didn't score was because of their shocking finishing.

  6. 'Not good enough'published at 22:40 British Summer Time 14 June 2021

    FT: Spain 0-0 Sweden

    Cesc Fabregas
Former Spain midfielder on BBC One

The second half was not good enough. Spain were not up for it, Sweden grew as the game went on and had the biggest two chances of the game.

If we want to go through, which I think we will, we need to improve.

    Cesc Fabregas
Former Spain midfielder on BBC One

This is another example of it's not how you start, it's how you finish.

Spain have enough quality to at least go through the group stage.

They need to look at the first half, they did good things there, although they didn't take their chances.

Spain didn't lose, it is not the end of the world and I believe they will grow up. We need to improve for sure.
