    Matteo Pessina

It's a brilliantly worked free-kick, Marco Verratti wins it and takes it and he fools everyone by finding Matteo Pessina at the front post and it's a lovely finish as he guides it across Danny Ward.

    Italy in front.

They're not afraid to commit men forward Italy, you wouldn't have seen this 30 or 40 years ago.

(EDITOR NOTE): Rob would remember. :)

    Italy 0-0 Wales

Italy probing, Wales deep, compact and organised.

Wales will be fine with this. Italy's possession is all in the middle third.

They are forced into a ball over the top and Andrea Belotti can't get there.

    Italy 0-0 Wales

Wales free-kick just inside Italy's half... Joe Rodon heads at goal, but it was a weak effort.

The one thing you know you've got is Dan James' pace in abundance down the left hand side. Just put it into that space and make Rafael Toloi turn or Leonardo Bonucci have to come across. Dan James will have him for pace and at the moment that's the only out ball I can see for Wales.

    How it stands

Switzerland started with a -3 goal difference before kick-off. They've got that down to -1 inside the opening half an hour in Baku.

Wales will confirm a top two spot with a draw in Rome.

Chris Gunter, making his 103rd appearance for Wales, scoring his first internaional goal in a European Championship match against Italy in Rome.

What a story that could have been.

  11. CLOSE!published at 30 mins

    Italy 0-0 Wales

Federico Chiesa is left totally unmarked as Neco Williams misjudges a cross, but Chiesa was caught in two minds between shooting and crossing and he lashed it across, rather than at goal.

    A let-off.

Though if Wales draw, it doesn't matter what Swizerland do.

You don't need me to tell you, but goal difference-wise, Wales could do with Switzerland chilling out a bit. Or Turkey to show a bit less chill.

    Switzerland 2-0 Turkey

Oh hello! Switzerland have doubled the lead in Baku. A BIG goal by Xherdan Shaqiri.

    Close!

Daniel James' corner is firmly headed at goal and just, just goes over.

And it was Chris Gunter! Can you even imagine. He's never scored for Wales.

Best chance for Italy as Andrea Belotti shoots across goal and wide after Federico Bernardeschi's clever pass.

Once again Wales gave the ball away cheaply.

Wales almost fashion a shooting chance. Some lovely Wales passing in the past minute. Nice interchanging and good confidence.

Not bad so far from a Welsh perspective, nothing conceded yet. One or two dangerous crosses but nothing more than that.

    Italy 0-0 Wales

    Is it a slog? Yes.

    Are Wales playing deep? Yes.

Do Italy look very threatening? Not so far.

I don't think Wales will be too unhappy midway through the first half.
