  2. 'Imperative Phillips is given a bit more freedom'published at 16:17 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    England v Germany (17:00 BST)

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

I thought he might have gone in with something similar with four at the back because we've looked very solid and haven't conceded. I think its imperative that Phillips is given a bit more freedom to get forward and help those three forwards. With the pace and ability of the wing backs it's going to be a huge competition and they've got to try and dominate and push those back.

  3. 'Wing backs are key to formation'published at 16:16 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    England v Germany (17:00 BST)

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think in this type of formation your wing backs are your key. They need to be high and wide to allow Saka and Sterling to play a little bit more central off Kane.

Kane will want to naturally come deep so you need your wing backs to make those runs, threatening in behind. But Saka and Sterling can create overloads if they want to create that link.

  4. 'A defensive-minded line up'published at 16:15 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    England v Germany (17:00 BST)

    Jurgen Klinsmann
Former Germany head coach on BBC One

    I am confident in general.

It [England's team] is a more defensive minded line up there is no doubt about it. If I compare to the Germany line up, they have more attacking power.

Obviously we don't know how it plays out but I think Gareth is maybe a bit more concerned about the first half hour and then the second half bring on the wild youngsters to terrorise the German side.

    England

England capatin Harry Kane told BBC Sport:

"We've played [with three at the back] a lot amongst this team. We've chopped and changed. It's something we're used to.

"Hopefully we can exploit some of their weaknesses.

"[Raheem Sterling and Bukayo Saka] bring pace and skill. Hopefully we can use that to our advantage. Hopefully we can score a few more goals.

"This is the business end of the tournament. I feel good and ready."

There's a fair few fans already in here and a huge roar went up when the England squad walked out to soak up the early atmosphere.

But it's started pouring it down again now. The seven rows in front of me are getting a soaking but don't worry, I'm dry... for now.

  11. 'Huge opportunity for players to write their own history'published at 16:10 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    England v Germany (17:00 BST)

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

I don't want any of these England players sat in a studio in 20 years time talking about losing a knockout game to the Germans. We are obsessed with this fixture but these boys don't need any of the baggage or anything.

It's our mistakes we've had in the past, this is a huge opportunity for this group of players to write their own history and give us something else to talk about. They've got to go out there and grab it and grasp it and do not let is pass. Games at Wembley against Germany, do not let is pass.

Alxspurs: You look at the England bench and the quality is incredible. Grealish, Bellingham, Sancho, Foden, Henderson etc. This is not a great Germany side, in comparison to the years of Sammer, Klinsmann, Matthaus, Özil etc. It’s England’s to lose!

I don't think you can move Saka after his last game, I thought he was very positive, he carries the ball ever so well. He runs at you, defenders don't like that and he has decent pace about him so you have to leave him where he was.

    England v Germany (17:00 BST)

    Micah Richards
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

In terms of England going forward, Saka and Sterling in behind will be a theat. If you look at Ginter and Hummels, they cannot run so I can see what Gareth's trying to do with pace on the wings.

Approve of picking Saka to start. Feels like we're missing the creative link from midfield to attack though.

  16. 'We have to win, simple as that'published at 16:05 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    England v Germany (17:00 BST)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate speaking to BBC on starting Bukayo Saka and Kieran Trippier: "It's down to their performances already in the tournament and in training.

"Bukayo's speed behind the backline will be really important and he's been comfortable at receiving under pressure. That will be key to today's game.

"Kieran has experience and adds to set-plays with his deliveries. He is one of the best communicators we have in the team.

"For it to be a wonderful night we have to win, it's as simple as that! We have to play with composure and we have to make good decisions. It is not a game which can be won just on passion and athleticism. We spoke to the players about that this week."

  17. 'Southgate is playing it safe'published at 16:04 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    England v Germany (17:00 BST)

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think you've matched Germany up and if you respect the team that much, match them up. They've gone for the same formation and they believe if it's a one on one battle all over the park, Gareth believe his players will beat the Germans. This squad has developed a lot under Gareth. If it's not working, there are enough players on the bench who can change the game as well. It's a bit cautious at first, but he's obviously playing it safe.

Wayne: I’ve backed Southgate for the most part, but leaving Phil Foden out is a massive mistake.

Sam: Not many teams could leave the talents of Rashford, Grealish, Mount, Foden and Sancho on the bench... The worry is, I'm not sure England should do either. we saw Portugal go out by playing defensive and not best utilising their attacking options.

The Wembley weather has turned a bit nasty. We've been hit with a downpour which may make the surface more greasy.

What a day for Arsenal teenager Bukayo Saka, who is rewarded for an excellent display against the Czech Republic with a start here against Germany.
