England midfielder Declan Rice on BBC One: "It's incredible, a lot of people had written us off in the group stage, complaints about the performances, not scoring enough but we want to put people wrong, with a full house everyone had the fire in the belly to one, knock Germany out and two progress in the tournament.

"It is history, all the players were asked about the past games but we created history. Gary Neville said these games don't come round often and it was a pleasure to be out there.

"Maturity comes in, you have had a yellow card and you have to stay composed and focussed.

"Raheem Sterling is proving so many people wrong, scoring so many goals. Harry Kane is made for the big occasions, scored the goal that put the game to bed.

"We don't want to get too ahead of ourselves but it is a massive game in Rome on Saturday. For today, the occasion, the fans, the players that were up for it. The dressing room, I have not been a part of a team with this togetherness. We really believe, with the tournament being at Wembley."

    FT: England 2-0 Germany

    Jurgen Klinsmann
Former Germany head coach on BBC One

You have to recognise the moment. This is England's moment. You've got to realise if you go through the quarter-final you play a semi-final here, and you maybe have a sell-out crowd in the final.

It's not going to be an easy road to the final, but it's doable. Now they have showed the belief, Harry Kane broke through and the energy is high. You've got to take advantage of that and win this all.

There's nobody left that England will fear. They'll all be tough but everyone in this draw England will feel comfortable they will beat.

  7. 'England will never ever have a better opportunity of winning the Euros'published at 19:13 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    FT: England 2-0 Germany

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

If you could have picked something like that [draw] then you would have. As I said before the game there's a lot of talk saying we can't finish top because we might play France or Portugal or whoever. You've got to go on and see what happens. We've beaten Germany and we've done it in an impressive way today.

The draw is decent I would say. England will never ever ever have a better opportunity of winning the Euros than this opportunity now. They're at Wembley, I know they go away for the next game but if they're lucky enough to get to a final that would have been six games at Wembley and you can't ask for any more than that with an atmosphere like this. They're right behind the players and the players are responding.

That's what happens when you put balls into the box. That what happens when you are prepared to run at people and commit people. There were some big performances out there in the second half.

Pickford one save in the first half, one save in the second half. Luke Shaw I thought was superb in that second half driving forward. Sterling obviously, John Stones in everything he did defensively I thought was pretty much spot on. And well done Gareth. He stuck to his plan, it worked. Onwards and upwards.

We hadn't won our opening game. We got rid of that. We hadn’t beaten Germany. We got rid of that.

This team are breaking down barriers. Everyone was saying we’re too negative, we don’t take risks. Southgate has a game plan to be hard to beat. These guys are playing for their manager. You can tell.

  12. Solid as a rock...published at 19:06 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    FT: England 2-0 Germany

England are only the second side in European Championship history not to concede in any of their first four games of an edition of the tournament, after Germany in 2016. The only previous time England did so at any major tournament (World Cup & EUROs) was at the 1966 World Cup.

  13. 'It might not be pretty, but we're getting it done'published at 19:05 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    FT: England 2-0 Germany

    Karen Carney
Former England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Key moments - experienced players stepped up, Jordan Pickford was sensational, Kieran Trippier and Harry Kane had their moments. They look exhausted - I hope they can recover and go again. This group has the experience - the fans are loving it. They've got the experienced players, they know how to get the job done.

It might not be pretty, it might not be the most attractive way but it's the England way and we're getting it done.

Gareth Southgate got it spot on today. The England he has built may be pragmatic, but they are so, so hard to beat. And they are developing the knack of seizing the moments they need to, to win games.

The momentum is there. He now needs to manage the expectation.

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

What an occasion. The atmosphere was absolutely amazing. Well done to the England players, well done to Gareth Southgate because he had a plan before the game. Plenty of impatient people in this stadium were shouting for more forward players on the pitch but he had his game plan, he put Grealish on at the right time and they got a little bit of luck when they needed it at 1-0 when Muller went through, you'd expect him to score there. It was a very dominant performance and they did what they had to.
