  1. 'With what went on in '96, you can't imagine how proud Southgate will be'published at 20:39 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    FT: England 2-0 Germany

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

Gareth Southgate will be feeling very very proud tonight and rightly so. Every decision he's made up to now has worked. We were all debating the first game the at the back. Trippier at left back. Then he changes it and goes head-to-head and matches Germany today playing three at the back. Then he makes the change at the right time and brings Grealish on who then changes the game. The wing backs he chose this evening in Trippier coming back and the performance Shaw put in the second half.

With what went on in '96 and him missing the penalty, you can't imagine how proud he'll be in that dressing room tonight. In putting a team out that's actually won a knockout game against Germany.

  2. 'A fabulous performance'published at 20:33 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    FT: England 2-0 Germany

    England

More from Gareth Southgate: "I just thought it was a brilliant afternoon. We have talked about bringing enjoyment to the nation and afternoons like this are what it is about. The players were immense right the way through the team and the fans were as well. It was a good an atmosphere I can remember at Wembley.

"We deserved to win but I am the partypooper because if we go and don't do it on Saturday it won't count for anything.

"You know that if you change the shape, you pick certain personnel over others and it goes wrong you are dead. We had to go about it in the way we believed. We felt speed in behind Harry Kane would cause them problems and I thought Saka and Sterling right from the start created that jeopardy in their back line.

"Our whole team defended brilliantly all the way through. It was a fabulous performance, I can't give enough credit to the players.

"They [Sterling and Kane] both have to prove people wrong all the time and Raheem has been immense for us over a period. We have that faith in him and trust in him and his performances have been electric right from the start.

For Harry when you are a centre forward you need those goals, I was pleased to see that second one go in."

England boss Gareth Southgate, speaking to BBC Sport: "I am just so pleased.

"I was looking at the big screen and saw David Seaman up there. For my team-mates that played with me I can't change that so it will always hurt but what is lovely is we have given people another day to remember and now we have to do it in Rome."

  5. Luke Shaw's performance is 'inspirational'published at 20:25 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    FT: England 2-0 Germany

    Micah Richards
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I have always liked Luke Shaw. Always used to go forward. I was always a little critical of his final delivery because his numbers at Southampton were not great. When he got his move to Man United I thought it was a perfect fit.

We expected to see this Luke Shaw a lot sooner, we talk about the injury and it is a nasty injury. To come back from the mental side of the game that isn't really talked about. To overcome all of that and play the way he did today is inspirational.

  8. 'We deserved the victory'published at 20:20 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    FT: England 2-0 Germany

    England

England defender Harry Maguire on BBC Radio 5 Live on the 2-0 win: "It was magnificent, to get the crowd going. The atmosphere is electric. We came out, we knew there was a lot of pressure on us to deliver a performance and a victory which is the most important bit. From start to finish apart from the first 10 minutes where we were a little bit nervy to a man everyone was excellent we deserved the victory.

On what it took to win: "I think first and foremost it took huge bravery, with and without the ball. We ant to go man for man as much as we can all over the pitch. They drop deep the attackers so sometimes its hard to get to the number 10s but we wanted to go man for man and be aggressive and I think it paid off. We didn't give them any good possession that we know they like to play and they have some top players they are a very good team.

On keeping a clean sheet: "First and foremost Jordan has been magnificent every game he has played for England and he will deserves all the plaudits he is probably going to get after today's game.

"He is under a huge amount of pressure, goalkeeper playing number one for England is probably the most scrutinised position in world football. Jordan has been magnificent out there.

"It is nice to keep clean sheets, it's what we are here to do. It's not the defence its the team, it's a unit. We are a solid base, we defend set pieces really well at the moment and it comes from the forwards and it builds back to the defenders heading the ball out of the box."

  9. 'A magnificent moment'published at 20:17 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    FT: England 2-0 Germany

    England

England's Harry Maguire, speaking to BBC Sport: "It is a magnificent moment for myself, the team, the fans, everyone involved in the country.

"It has been a tough couple of years for everyone in this country so to put smiles back on faces... everyone is celebrating at home and in the stadium.

"We had to be brave on and off the ball, we had to take the ball under pressure. Not give them easy possession as they like to play possession game.

"First 10 minutes it was a little bit nervous, we gave the ball away a bit too much but it is expected when you are playing here, I am sure everyone will enjoy the experience but learn from it as well.

"I think we have excellent defenders in this country. Sometimes with all the scrutiny that the Premier League gets every goal gets analysed and people pick up on the slightest things We have excellent defenders and a magnificent goalkeeper behind us.

"II think we have excellent players. It is a unit, it comes from Gareth in the way he sets us up and then of course the forward lads. It starts from the front and finishes with us, keeping clean sheets is nice but the main thing is winning football matches."

  10. 'Maguire takes matters into his own hands'published at 20:15 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    FT: England 2-0 Germany

    Jurgen Klinsmann
Former Germany head coach on BBC One

When I coached Bayern Munich I had the Brazilian centre back Lucio and Lucio is very similar to Harry Maguire. He just took the ball and went into midfield and ran off and Harry is very similar. He's a positive lad, he's a leader and he takes matters into his own hands when it's needed and I like that.

  11. Star of the matchpublished at 20:13 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    FT: England 2-0 Germany

England's Harry Maguire was named Uefa's 'Star of the Match' for the game at Wembley.

His fine work helped England become only the second side in European Championship history not to concede in any of their first four games of an edition of the tournament, after Germany in 2016. The only previous time England did so at any major tournament (World Cup & Euros) was at the 1966 World Cup.

Well deserved from England. They believed in it, they dominated the second half. Germany had two or three big chances and didn't use them. England used them and it's well deserved. A fantastic night for England.

I am so proud of the team. We talked about the emotions before the game and what it would mean to these players but they stepped up.

They put in a great performance, it wasn't the most electrifying performance but they got the job done.

They managed the game, another clean sheet. Pickford was outstanding.

  15. 'We want to go all the way'published at 20:09 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    FT: England 2-0 Germany

    England

England captain Harry Kane speaking to BBC: "It's an amazing day and it was an amazing game. To hear Wembley like this was a moment none of us will ever forget. It's the perfect afternoon. We will enjoy this one but we have another big one on Saturday now.

"I took a blow to the knee but I knew it was just contact. You have to be ready for the next chance. Jack [Grealish] put in a great cross and I was able to put it in. All strikers want to score goals. It was good to score my first in the tournament and hopefully I can score more from now until the end.

"Any team will be looking at us and know that we're dangerous. Of course we want to to score goals and we're keeping clean sheets. We need to get it right on Saturday now. We can't switch off. We want to go all the way so need to keep it up.

"There isn't anything bigger than this when the expectation is on and we delivered so we should be proud but we can't stop here. We have a vision of where we want to go and we can't stop now. Hopefully we'll be back here in the semi-finals and the final."

  16. 'Harry Kane's goal changes the world'published at 20:05 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    FT: England 2-0 Germany

    Jurgen Klinsmann
Former Germany head coach on BBC One

When you're the captain of the team, the players are looking at you. They want their leader being in the tournament, being full of energy, being positive, being confident. Harry Kane was lacking a bit of confidence you saw that in his movements and he had very few touches the first 20-25 minutes. It took him a long time to get into it like in the previous games as well, but this goal changes the world for him and he's in there now, his team-mates know Harry's back and nobody stops us anymore.

  17. 'You might see a different Harry Kane now'published at 20:02 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    FT: England 2-0 Germany

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

That goal will ignite Harry Kane. He had looked flat, there's no doubt about it in the first half. There was a lack of movement, the ball wasn't coming in and then you maybe stop running. But then when you put balls in the box that's when he comes alive. I'm certain you might see a different Harry Kane now.

You don't sleep when you don't score, you don't sleep when you score because you worry about it. Now he won't be able to sleep tonight with the excitement because he'll feel 10ft tall again and he can't wait for the next game to come around. That's the life of a centre forward.
