More from England manager Gareth Southgate:

"In terms on the players, they have given everything they could have. Not only tonight but throughout the whole tournament. They should hold their heads high. They have pulled together to give the country some incredible evenings but the devastation of getting so close is difficult to put into context. You can imagine how the dressing room is."

It was cruelly ironic that for all undoubted process that Gareth Southgate's side have made in the thrilling las few weeks, it was their old enemy, the penalty shootout that sealed their fate.

They will have assumed perhaps that after winning in a similar way at the last World Cup three years ago, they may have overcome that psychological barrier. But it turns out not to be the case.

The fans had believed that football this time was coming home but not here and not tonight.

Cameron Johnson: Yes we might have lost tonight and it’s so painful, but whilst he was on the pitch I thought @_DeclanRice, external put in one of the best midfield performances I’ve seen.

Dan Tree: Everyone should be tweeting @BukayoSaka87, external, @Sanchooo10, external & @MarcusRashford, external their support. They have done the nation proud the past 5 weeks & will be feeling awful right now but they had the guts to stand up and got us to the final!

Andy Houghton: Focus on the positives from this tournament. We gave the country hope. We brought inspiration. We brought belief. I’m proud of every single english player. We are just warming up!

I told you earlier that Gianluigi Donnarumma was named 'player of the tournament' by Uefa. To add to that, Spain's Pedri was deservedly named 'young player of the tournament'.

Cristiano Ronaldo won the golden boot as leading scorer. He scored five, the same as the Czech Republic's Patrik Schick, but takes the aware courtesy of his one assist.

We were beaten by the best team in the tournament and the best team in the 120 minutes.

You have to be really proud of the young players who put their hands up and took a penalty. Unfortunately today it just wasn't to be.

It will hurt like hell for the rest of their careers but they have made us feel so proud over this last month. It's football and it's horrible when things like this happen but you have to move on and find a way.

  15. 'They have given the country some unbelievable memories'published at 23:55 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

Italy 1-1 England (3-2 on pens)

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate speaking on BBC One:

On how he feels after the defeat: "We are hugely disappointed of course, I think firstly the players have been an absolute credit, they have given everything they possibly could. Tonight exactly the same, they have run themselves into the ground. At times they played really well, at times we didn't really keep the ball quite well enough. Especially at the start of the second half. But they cant have recriminations. They have been an absolute joy to work with and they have gone further than we've gone for so long. But of course tonight it is incredibly painful in that dressing room."

His message to Bukayo Saka: That is it is down to me, I decided on the penalty takers based on what they have done in training and nobody is on their own. We have won together as a team and it is on all of us together to not be able to win the game tonight and in terms of penalties it is my call and it totally rests with me."

On the confidence when it went to penalties: "We were well prepared and we started it well, unfortunately we weren't able to convert tonight. They cant look at themselves in terms of how they practice because they couldn't have done that anymore or any better."

On what he has said to the players: "We are all together, they have given the country some unbelievable memories, tonight is going to be extremely difficult for all of us of course. You have to feel that disappointment because the opportunities to win trophies like this are so rare in your life. But when they reflect on what they have done, they should be incredibly proud of themselves."

On the positives from the tournament: "I am sure it a few days that will be more possible than it is now really. at the moment the pain of the defeat is huge, we wanted to give our nation one more special night and a first European championship and we haven't quite been able to do it."

On the prospects of the group ahead of the World Cup: Personally I cant really talk about that tonight, that feels like a million miles away. I think for certain this team can be better and improve, you have seen the number of young players we have blooded in in this tournament who have been absolutely fantastic. But the for the future I need a bit of time to reflect on that."

Bonucci and Chiellini have grit and determination, they've got footballing ability, nous in how to defend and the dark arts in how to defend down to a tee. But the two biggest things they have got is character and personality. When the going gets tough these guys get bigger.

It's not been mentioned but not having Foden available was a big miss. He could have given us some control and stability in midfield with his movement and ability to hold the ball up or move it quickly.

    Mike, Viney Hill

Senior players should have stepped up and took responsibility on the pens. It's too much for these younger players..
