Throughout the whole tournament we have heard real human stories that have connected the fans with the players. Raheem Sterling, we know about Marcus Rashford, Kalvin Phillips and the relationship he had with his grandmother. These are all the connections that connect the fans and show that they are human beings first and foremost.

I think it's important that Walker and Stones play together at Manchester City, Maguire and Shaw play together at Manchester United and Trippier being so versatile, he fits into any system.

Communication is the most important thing when you're on the pitch, there where be times when Walker, Stones and Maguire will go into positions that they don't want to be in and then players will have to cover them. As long as they're brave, the entire backline should have a good game.

Huge experience for the two centre backs. But sometimes you have to play on that, in terms of their legs, their mobility.

You have asked Chiellini will he come in with me. You have to build up a bit of patience, the moment the defender follows the ball, the space becomes available.

That is what [England] will have to do. Suck the defender out play games with them and then you can get positions where you can exploit that space.

You cannot go down a goal against Italy, what happened with Denmark a beautiful free kick and England were suddely down a goal. You can still repair that and obviously they repaired it.

Against Italy, if Italy scores the first goal you will not be able to repair that so do not concede especially in the first 45 minutes and then step by step become more courages.

This Italian team is a different one, they can sit back, but also they can high pressure, create an amazing flowing game, fast tempo. It is different Italian side than we have ever seen before.

  8. 'England improved during the competition'published at 19:43 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

Italian World Cup winner Alessandro Nesta on BBC One:

On how Mancini turned Italy around: "Mancini changed the mentality. We play different. Before it was everyone back, we wait to counter attack and now we try to attack every game. Mancini is a good coach."

On what the Italian press make of England: "England improved during the competition. The first two games I didn't like, but now it is a consistent team. It is good and strong and it's going to be a tough game for both teams."

On how Italy can beat England: "They attack. We have to do something more with our striker. Ciro today has to do more. I hope Ciro Immobile will score."

One of the great days of my life when Manchester City won the Premier League title and Roberto Mancini was the man who lead us to that. From pre-match, he made sure everyone was eating the right things and when we got on the coach and he would ask every single player how they are feeling. What people don't understand, Mancini will put his arm around you if you need it.

A lot of people think that Mancini is a defensive manager, but in the changing room it was all about attack, 'let's get in that position where we're in front and we can manage the game.'

They can't get away from the fact that we have had an advantage playing here, but there are numerous players who - if this was a year before when it should have been - they would not have been in the team.

They have been allowed to develop, gain experience and they have won things as well. That all adds to where we are today but you still have to execute.

I have to be one of the ones to admit this, before the tournament if you asked me if I thought he was the right man for the job, like many people I doubted him in many areas, tactically maybe. What has he done as a club manager?

Even the last tournament, there was not much ability to change formation and be adaptable. He has changed my mind and smashed it out of the park.

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on BBC One: "To see the impact it has had on everyone, the drive to the stadium, seeing every community, religion, heritage, was fabulous to see.

"The way Italy play is pretty consistent, they cause you a tactical problem which we have to resolve. We want our attacking players to stay high up and hurt them on the counter.

"Mason Mount plays that position really well, has done for Chelsea and we need the link between midfield and attack. He has great intelligence and great technique.

"I am done now, it is over to them. They are ready, they are getting more and more big match experience and coped with it well throughout the tournament."

I think it's been spot on. Every decision that Southgate has made has worked perfectly. Whether that was starting with Trippier at left-back, whether that was bringing Saka into the team. Whether that was matching Germany. There was a lot of criticism beforehand. He stuck with Raheem Sterling, look what happened there.

The squad is super chilled and just knocking the ball around. You'd never think that this is a final of a European championship. There is a good vibe and I'm loving it.

Everyone looks calm. It's actually more chilled that I expected, they're focused and just doing their warm up. I think I'm more anxious than them, but I'm pretty confident.

The great Giorgio Chiellini was pumping his fists before he even got into the dressing room and was at it again as he sprinted out at Wembley for Italy's warm-up. A truly great defender coming to the end of his international career, Chiellini will want to add a Euro 2020 winners' medal to his glittering collection with Juventus.
