This was Manchester City's first ever victory over Real Madrid. They had lost two and drawn two before today.

Sergio Aguero and his 252 City goals weren't needed tonight as he stayed on the bench, but he's a happy man in Madrid.

Pep Guardiola has now won more Champions League knockout stage matches than any other manager (28).

Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey: "We knew it was going to be a difficult place to come.

"They have some great players. They took full advantage. We tried and tried to break them down but it just wasn't meant to be. We're still in this tie, there's still a long way to go.

Kevin de Bruyne was quiet-ish for the first 60 minutes. But once he got more involved, he delivered. He has taken the midfield role to another level. He got yet another assist and he's come up with an important goal. We've joked about Ederson but De Bruyne is the man to take the pens.

He's already a great player, but to become a legend, he needs to drive this team on to win the Champions League.

Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro: "The tie isn't finished with this result. We played 75 spectacular minutes against a great team.

"Then in just 15 minutes we didn’t do any of what he should have done. That’s why they fought back and cancelled out our lead. We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us now.

"If there’s any team capable of overcoming this deficit in the second leg it’s Real Madrid."

Gareth Bale came on with 15 minutes to go today, with Real leading 1-0. He had nine touches, his side lost 2-1 and had their captain sent off.

To lose your best centre-back is a massive blow but they have John Stones and Fernandinho who can come in and do a good job.

I've been there with injuries and you could see he wasn't fully fit at the weekend against Leicester.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to BT Sport: "We tried to come here to win the game and we did. This is just the first part. If one team can overcome this situation, it's this club.

"When we were better, we conceded a goal. When they were bettter, we scored a goal. That's football. I remember the quarter-final a few seasons ago at Anfield when we played incredibly well and they scored all their shots on target."

On Aymeric Laporte's injury...

"After five months injured in this scenario it's so demanding. Fernandinho came in and did incredibly well. I'm so proud. This is the first step. It's not over. We can enjoy the moment. On Sunday we have a final. We'll keep going in the Premier League and prepare for the second game against Real Madrid."

Real are second in the league, but the transition from the golden years has not been made. From Bale, Benzema and Cristiano, today we had Benzema, Isco and Vinicius up front. It's not been an easy transition because it's impossible to replace 50 goals a season.

After last season, the club could have been ruthless but they kept on Kroos, Modric and Benzema for one more season. Zidane will always depend on the players he has rather than the work he does. There is no collective answer to the problems they have.

If Real Madrid fans think that is bad, Chelsea were given an actual 0% chance by Gracenote yesterday.

Raheem Sterling has not been in the greatest form of late. But he can change games with the way he runs at defenders. You can see why Real Madrid are interested in him, he walks into that side. But City have got better players than them.

After all that happened with Uefa, this is a different City. They are working harder and working together. Everyone throws stones at you when you play for City, so to have that unity, it's them against the world. They are really fighting for each other.

Manchester City goalscorer Kevin de Bruyne to BT Sport: "It's a very good start. We struggled in the first 15 minutes but you have to go through the storm.

"It was an even first half. We started the second half really well. Their goal came at a bad moment for us - we were dominating. Our response was brilliant. It was a beautiful goal from Gabriel Jesus.

"In four years with Pep, he sometimes surprises. Sometimes players aren't told until the game what we need to do. There were some good and some lesser moments. In a quality game like this, you'll struggle sometimes.

"We're only halfway there. We have an important game at home in three weeks. Now we have to recover for Sunday's final [in the Carabao Cup against Aston Villa]..

But I go to the pitch to help my team-mates. It doesn't matter if I have to run back or forwards. I have to help my team-mates.
