You need to look at the opposition but do I think Pep does it too much? Yes. Teams should be scared of Man City. If Sane was fit, Laporte fully fit, Kyle Walker at his best, Sterling, Aguero, they are one of the best teams.

Manchester City have emerged over the past decade as a major force on the European stage but Wednesday's opponents Real Madrid still boast higher revenue and profits than the Premier League side, based on their most recent accounts.

Gabriel Jesus came on and changed the game against Leicester, but you would rather have Sergio Aguero's quality against the top teams. I regard Fernandinho as a midfielder, so I would go for Aymeric Laporte and Nicolas Otamendi or Laporte and John Stones.

I would still have David Silva in my team every time, but I understand this thing about Pep Guardiola wanting more legs.

  5. 'This is the real test'published at 19:09 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2020

Real Madrid v Man City (20:00 GMT)

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has called today's opponents "the kings of this competition".

Real have won a record 11 European Cups, including four in the past six years.

"This is the real test. The kings of this competition against one team who aren't used to playing these kind of games much, as our best performance was one semi-final," said Pep Guardiola.

"We have to show our personality. I know my players, myself, all the club want to fight until the end for this title.

"But if you want to do that [win the title] you have to face these teams sooner or later. You have to beat Madrid, you have to beat Barcelona, you have to beat Bayern Munich. You have to beat the big, big teams.

"If we're able to do it we'll be so happy. If not then next season... well, next season I don't know but when we are able to play we are going to come back."

Leaving Sergio Aguero out is a surprise. But it looks like Pep Guardiola has gone for legs in the team, a bit more mobility. The other surprise is Nicolas Otamendi in at centre-half and no Fernandinho.

Both teams boast a remarkable array of world-class players - but what would a team made up of the best from both sides look like?

We asked you to choose your XI and you picked six City and five Real players (by 14:30 GMT on Wednesday).

Kevin de Bruyne was selected in an impressive 95% of teams - and was actually the most popular pick in all three midfield positions. Sergio Aguero was the next most popular in 93% of teams - compared to 22% for Karim Benzema. Eden Hazard made your team too despite being injured.

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is unsure whether injured forward Eden Hazard will play again this season.

Hazard, 29, who joined Real from Chelsea in June in an initial deal worth £89m, suffered a fractured ankle during his side's 1-0 La Liga loss to Levante on Saturday.

The Belgian - who has only scored once in 15 games for Real - was only playing his second game back after a similar injury.

"I don't know if his season is over, I don't know but I hope not," said Zidane.

"I don't know if he will need an operation, it's not my area. I can see he's not happy.

"It's important he stays positive but of course it's difficult. It's a bad moment, it won't be easy and he will feel like this for a while."

Pep Guardiola has constantly changed his formation since the turn of the year and he seems to be focusing more on the opposition at the moment, rather than just playing his strongest available team and having trust in them.

Of course you have got to be aware of the different threats you will face in two-legged ties like this, but I think City are at their best when they play their way.

By that, I mean when they focus on attacking football rather than studying the other team and coming up with a game plan to try to stop them - and that applies whoever they are up against, even Real.

When you face Real on a big occasion like this, you fear their experience, their history and the whole aura of the club - but the tie will not be decided by any of that.

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling is available after three weeks out with a hamstring injury.

Midfielder David Silva could also play after a minor knee issue.

Winger Leroy Sane is unavailable as he recovers from a long-term knee problem.

"Raheem is fit, his natural physical condition and regeneration is amazing," said Pep Guardiola.

"He told us he could play at West Ham and Leicester but the doctors said be careful as muscular injuries take three weeks. After 15 days he wanted to play. He is fit, he is ready."

Eden Hazard is ruled out for Real Madrid.

Manchester City have been banned from European competitions for two years and fined 30m euros (£25m) for "serious breaches" of Uefa's financial regulations.

They have registered their appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).

If that is not successful, they will be out of Europe until 2022-23 (if they qualify then).

Cas says "it is not possible" to say when the matter will be resolved.

But will it be their last journey to Europe for two and a half years?
