  2. Loan move for Giroud?published at 13:30 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2020

    Brighton & Hove Albion

    Scott McCarthy - WeAreBrighton.com

We desperately need a striker. In public, Graham Potter constantly praises Glenn Murray - but the fact the striker hasn't started a game since September tells you everything you need to know. Neal Maupay starts every week; Aaron Connolly, another regular, hasn't scored since the start of October.

We gave Potter a new six-year contract in November after he'd won just four Premier League games but unless we get a striker we could be bang in relegation trouble.

A loan move for somebody such as Olivier Giroud or another proven Premier League striker out-of-favour at a bigger club would be perfect, although in all honesty that's probably pie-in-the-sky thinking.

More likely is that we pay Boca Juniors to cut short Alexis Mac Allister's season-long loan now that he has been given a work permit, but pitching a 21-year-old who has never played in Europe into a relegation battle would be a big risk.

Before the end of 2019, Alireza Jahanbakhsh would have been first out the door but two goals in two games have earned him a reprieve. Leon Balogun, and Ezequiel Schelotto have all become surplus to requirements under Potter, while Gaetan Bong has left to join Nottingham Forest. Of those, Bong is the only one I am sad to see leave. He's been a good servant to the club.

  7. 'Signings give Arsenal a boost'published at 13:14 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2020

    Arsenal

Akhil Vyas - Arsenal Supporters Trust

Good to see two defensive signings - and very sensible deals. It gives us a boost for the rest of the season and time for us to make a decision on them while planning for next season.

Cedric Soares has that Premier League experience and can play in both full back positions. We've had some injuries with Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney this season, so the additional cover puts us in a good place when competing in three competitions.

Looking forward we also have William Saliba who looks a very exciting player to come into this squad next season. It's time to impress the new head coach because these players literally are playing for their futures.

  12. DONE DEAL - Blades sign Zivkovicpublished at 13:03 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2020
    Breaking

Sheffield United have followed up the signing of Sander Berge with the capture of Dutch striker Richairo Zivkovic on loan from Chinese club Changchun Yatai.

The Blades have an option to make the deal permanent in the summer.

"People will recognise we do sometimes go left field with our signings, but we've worked very hard on this one, because we have had to," Wilder said.

"We know enough about him, we've kept tabs on Richairo for a while and tracked his progress. He is a Dutch international at ages under the senior level, he'll be unpredictable to other teams, but we know what we're getting and he wants to make the most of the opportunity.

"He will give us genuine pace at the top of the pitch. We're learning all the time this season, but pace in the Premier League is key and Richairo is someone we think can kick us on."

Ten hours to go until the transfer window shuts in England. It has been relatively slow on the transfers front so far but there's plenty of hours left in the day.

    Here's the main headlines:

    • Cedric Soares joins Arsenal on loan from Southampton
    • Rangers sign Genk midfielder Ianis Hagi
    • Bournemouth Eddie Howe confirms Man Utd interest in Joshua King
    • Olivier Giroud to Spurs remains a possibility
    • Gareth Bale not returning to Tottenham

  14. Aston Villa defender Chester set for Stokepublished at 12:59 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2020

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Stoke have agreed a deal for Aston Villa defender James Chester to join them on loan for the rest of the season.

Chester joined Villa on a four-year deal from West Brom in 2016 but has been limited to two appearances this term after failing to impress manager Dean Smith.

That deal will allow Mark Duffy to return to Sheffield United after dropping out of the first-team picture at Stoke following Michael O'Neill's arrival as manager.

Duffy is expected to join Dutch club Den Haag.

Scoring at Old Trafford was 'pure emotion' - Rochdale teenager Matheson

It has been quite the season for Luke Matheson. From scoring at Old Trafford for Rochdale to being on the verge of a dream move to the Premier League with Wolves.

Absolutely delighted for him as well. Seems an incredible switched on young kid, as can be seen in his interview in the above video.

  18. 'By selling Sam we’ve filled a black hole'published at 12:50 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2020

    Clive Eakin
    BBC Coventry & Warwickshire Sport

Coventry City manager Mark Robins has warned supporters they shouldn’t expect new signings today despite the sale of Sam McCallum to Norwich.

The teenage defender has been sold to the Premier League club for a reported initial fee of £3.5m. He returns to Coventry on loan until the end of the season.

Robins says he’s been promised support for recruitment in the summer and says the sale of McCallum underlines the need to get the club back in Coventry as soon as possible and to push season ticket sales.

“By selling Sam we’ve filled a black hole and this year’s is a bigger black hole because we’re not in Coventry. That’s the big thing for me, we want to get back to Coventry and make sure we have a significant amount of season ticket holders as quickly as we possibly can so I can build as much as we need to.”
