    Oxford v Newcastle (20:05 GMT)

Former head of the COP26 climate summit, Claire O’Neill, earlier told BBC Radio 4 that the UK's climate efforts were at "Oxford United levels when we need to be Liverpool if we are going to do what the world actually needs us to do".

Don't worry, we're not getting all political. But today we'll discover just what Oxford United's level is as they host Premier League Newcastle.

  4. 'Newcastle will need to be better'published at 19:20 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2020

    Oxford v Newcastle (20:05 GMT)

    Steve Wilson
    Match of the Day commentator

Newcastle, who were beaten 3-0 in their only previous visit to the Kassam Stadium, are the third Premier League to visit Oxford United this season. The promotion-chasing League One side thumped West Ham 4-0 in the Carabao Cup before succumbing to Manchester City in the last eight of the same competition.

Karl Robinson's squad has been weakened since the draw at St James' Park by the sale of both Shandon Baptiste and Tariqe Fosu to Brentford - but that defeat to City is one of only two for Oxford in their last 18 home games.

Steve Bruce's side will have to be better than they were 10 days ago if they are to progress to a fifth-round tie at West Brom.

  5. 'Oxford won't make it easy'published at 19:17 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2020

Oxford Utd v Newcastle (20:05 GMT)

    Alan Shearer
Former Newcastle and England striker on BBC TV

When you look at the record of Newcastle in this competition - we got to two finals when I was playing but we didn't manage to win it but we at least had a go. That is what these fans want.

They haven't been successful in this competition under Mike Ashley, they haven't been past the fourth round and they will want to this time.

It will be a really tough game. Oxford United's priority will be to get out League One but they showed in the first game at St James' Park that it won't be easy.

  6. 'We’re not going to catch Liverpool so why not have a crack?'published at 19:14 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2020

    Oxford v Newcastle (20:05 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce to BBC Sport: “With injuries we’ve got no real choice [in who to select]. We’ve gone as strong as we can do and we want to reach the next round.

“I’ve managed in a cup final [with Hull]. When you look back it’s a great occasion and a great day. We’re not going to win the Premier League – we’re not going to catch Liverpool so why not have a crack?

"From day one when I walked through the door I said let’s have a crack in the cup competition. It’s a competition we can win. That will be our mantra all the way through. Let’s see where it takes us.

"We’ve changed [formation] slightly a bit today. I hope it bears fruit. It’s difficult for our forward players, the way we play. We have to keep plugging away.

"Oxford are a good side. We’ve seen them perform very well at St James’ Park. We know how difficult it will be."

  12. 'It is important we play the Liverpool way'published at 18:54 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2020

    Liverpool v Shrewsbury (19:45 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool U23 boss Neil Critchley: "It is a special evening for the staff and players and for the academy. I am the one standing here but I like to think I am representing the academy and the staff. I am proud of that and I will be more proud if they play the way I know they can.

"What happens in both penalty boxes is very important and vital to the result. We had long spells against Aston Villa that we were in the game but we did not score at one end and did not keep them out at the other. We are in a results driven business and if you do not do well in both boxes then it is not a good recipe for success.

"We never know what team we might have at U23 level but have had time to prepare for this. There will not be any mixed messages and it is important we go out to play the Liverpool way.

"We will find out (how the players respond), that is the beauty of the game. Some of them have played in this environment and done well so hopefully they can continue that. Some who have less experience, hopefully they can help them, we will need the crowd to be with us.

"We are here to do a job, play and play well. You only enjoy it if you play well. We know what we have to do tonight and give Shrewsbury a run for their money. I am sure we can which will make it more enjoyable."

One round of Premier League games are meant to be staggered over this weekend and the following weekend - meaning each top-flight club should get two weeks between games.

But the FA Cup replays have been put during those two weeks so Newcastle get 12 days and Liverpool get 11.

In fact Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was so unhappy, he is not attending today. And neither are his first-team players.

He's sent his under-23 team and head coach to Anfield instead.
