    Oxford 2-3 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce to BBC TV: "Twice we've made hard work of it. I thought we deserved to win. I didn't think we were in any danger at 2-0. But a great free-kick and wonderful volley and all of a sudden it's game on.

"Fair play, the players stuck at it and we won with a wonder goal.

"I was delighted with Sean Longstaff. He looked a threat all evening. He had a serious knee injury towards the back end of last season. Today he gave me food for thought. He enjoyed the licence to go forward. This was his best performance of the season by a million miles.

"Overall we deserved it. Until the last 10 minutes, I can’t see my keeper with much to do.

"We've had two replays against Rochdale and Oxford, no disrespect. We’ve made hard work of it but we deserve to be in the fifth round against West Brom.

"We need it [the winter break]. If any club needs it, we do. We’ve struggled. We were playing two wide players through the middle. Let's hope we can get some players back during the break. The players deserve a break."

    FT: Oxford 2-3 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle goalscorer Allan Saint-Maximin: "I'm happy to score this goal as it's really important for my team.

"Oxford are a really good team and they tried to keep going and at 2-2 it became a more difficult game for us but we keep going and we win 3-2, so I'm really happy."

Newcastle goalscorer Sean Longstaff: "It was a massive result.

"When it went 2-2, I think everybody in the stadium and watching at home expected us to crumble but it just shows what we've got in the dressing room and a great spirit.

"We want to take the cup really seriously and we've got to come to places like this where it's tough and have a great response and really happy to get through."

Oxford’s players will be devastated. But they should be very proud. It’s been a great occasion. They’ve done themselves proud live on the TV. They showed immense character to give themselves an opportunity. Their priority, as it always has been, is to get out of League One but they can take great confidence from this.
