Well we all have bad days at the office, but full respect to David Luiz for coming out and fronting up after that one.

Will he be at Arsenal beyond this little mini season though?

Arsenal defender David Luiz, who was sent off, told Sky Sports: "It was not the team's fault it was my fault. The coach is amazing, all the players did amazing, it was just my fault.

"I should have taken a different decision in the last two months. I didn't - it was all about my contract."

What different decision? "Different decision to try and decide my future as early as possible but I didn't. I don't want to use that as an excuse, it was my fault and that is it.

"I love to be here that is why I continue to train hard and that is why I came today. Nobody asked me to speak, it is up to me to show my face. I want to stay. The coach knows and wants me to stay, we are waiting for the decisions."

  4. 'Everything went wrong'published at 23:02 British Summer Time 17 June 2020

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to Sky Sports: "Everything went wrong from the first minute. Every possible accident that could have happened hopefully happened today."

Was lengthy lay-off a reason behind the injuries? "If they were muscular injuries, maybe yes. But these ones I don't think so."

On David Luiz' s performance: "He is someone that is very honest and straight forward. My opinion on David Luiz hasn't changed. It won't change because he had a difficult performance tonight."

On leaving Mesut Ozil out of the squad: "It was a tactical reason."

On 'Black Lives Matter' support: "I think it is bringing everyone back together again in a very strong message."

Premier League players take knee in Black Lives Matter solidarity

Manchester City goalscorer Raheem Sterling to Sky Sports: "It’s been a confusing last couple of weeks. We're all buzzing to be back in the stadium and put in a good effort.

"We expected it to be weird but the message after the break was to find something inside ourselves and dig deep.

"First 10 minutes we were getting used to the atmosphere but after that I thought we controlled the game well."

On players taking a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement: "I see it as a massive step for the Premier League to allow something like that to happen and it shows we're going in the right direction.

"Little by little we’re seeing change. It was natural, it was organic. We saw the teams do it in the earlier kick-off and thought it was something we had to do as well."

More from Pep Guardiola on taking a knee to support the Black Lives Matter movement before kick-off:

"We should send a thousand million messages for the black people. I'm embarrassed and ashamed of what the white people have done for the black people.

"How people can think they are different? All the gestures are good and positive. Everything we can do to make it conscious, it is not acceptable.

"We have to do a lot of things for the black people which we have not done so far."

  8. 'We are really concerned'published at 22:45 British Summer Time 17 June 2020

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to Sky Sports: "We are really concerned [about Eric Garcia]. He responded quite well but we have to wait. He is conscious which is a good sign. We will make another test.

"In the beginning it was a lot of energy. Everybody wanted the ball. It was not quiet. We had chances. It was important to score before half time.

"I am happy with the performance of the team. I see in a good shape, the team, which is a good thing for the next few games.

"We have one eye on the next game. Aymeric Laporte was out for a long injury. We have players who play 50, 60 minutes which is good. And can maybe play the next one good."

  9. Lagos callingpublished at 22:43 British Summer Time 17 June 2020

    Unintended consequences and all that...

6,500km (4,000 miles) away in Nigeria's commercial capital, Lagos, there was little sign of any social distancing as crowds flocked to watch tonight's game.

As the English Premier League resumed, the Sir T pub, in the mainland part of Lagos where there are poor neighbourhoods, was packed with football lovers who defied heavy rain - almost all cheering for Arsenal, who enjoy huge and dedicated support among Nigeria's millions of football fans.

Less than 50 metres from the pub was a police checkpoint where officers began enforcing a curfew that began from 22:00, a few minutes before the game ended.

"I have been at home for too long, I have missed football," said Tochukwu, an Arsenal fan who kept raising his face mask intermittently to sip his beer.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I remember why I watched football. I watch football for the artistry of it and the entertainment on the pitch. No, it was not as good but I still saw plenty of that today. Kevin de Bruyne provided much of it, but I can watch this.

  13. 'Football crowds cannot come back quickly enough'published at 22:32 British Summer Time 17 June 2020

    John Murray
    BBC Radio 5 Live commentator

We've watched a decent game here tonight but I have really missed a crowd. Really missed it. It is one of the things that makes big time football - big crowds, noisy crowds. It makes it for everyone. We need it and it can't come back quickly enough.

It is really eerie now inside the ground. Normally we would be packing up here and going down to press conferences but they are not happening in the press conference room, they are happening by zoom so all of the journalists are just staying in their seats because those interviews will happen here.

Raheem Sterling is doing a socially distanced interview down by the pitch.
