Tottenham mentally not strong enough - Mourinho

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho says his side were "not mentally strong enough" in their 3-1 Premier League defeat by Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

Harry Kane had a goal ruled out when Sheffield United were leading 1-0 in the first half by VAR after Lucas Moura was deemed to have handled the ball.

"I think that moment is game over," says Mourinho. "I think in the second half my players were not mentally strong enough to cope with that disappointment and they have to be.

"I am not just going to say that goal is the cause of everything. It would be very easy for me to do that but I don't want to go in that direction. I have to say that mentally we were not strong enough.

"In the second half we tried but we didn't try with that conviction, that belief that we would change the game and we still had 45 minutes to change the game."

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to Sky Sports about the VAR decision to not award his side a goal: "I cant say what I think, I would be in trouble. I would be suspended and I don't want to be.

"The one here is not the referee. The referee is hidden in some office. The man on the pitch pitch is not the referee, he does not make the decisions. I don't speak with the assistant referee - who is the one on the pitch.

"It is not how I feel, it is the reality. The linesman makes a decision but of course technology makes the decision in the office where they are. Decisions on penalties, handballs, free kicks, It is not made by the referee on the pitch. The referee on the pitch is not the referee.

"I don't want to speak especially about Michael Oliver, especially about him. I want to be on the bench in the next game. I don't want to be involved in any process, so lets move in another direction."

Some nice insight here from m'colleague Tom Rostance...

Pep Guardiola, coming over here with his fancy dan ways and...oh wait, it's pretty much 4-4-2 tonight from City.

Interestingly. Kevin de Bruyne (the 17 tucked in behind Gabriel Jesus' 9) has been the most furthest man forwards at times.

    Man City 3-0 Liverpool

So, this is the first time since May 2015 and a game against Stoke that Liverpool have been 3-0 down at half-time in the Premier League.

They were actually 5-0 down then and lost that game 6-1.

Brabble: Are Liverpool even trying? What is this? Might've won the league but it's very much an 'old-Liverpool' thing to throw a game like this. Motivation should remain high - records waiting to be broken. We're league Champions and I'm actually furious.

Jimmy4986: This was inevitable really. Once you win a title I don't care who you are, it is so difficult to motivate yourself for the remaining games. Lot of the #lfc, external players will be thinking about the summer now and the beach. Rightly so too, they have earnt it

That half was a lashing out - a demonstration of frustration. It practically said: 'oh, you can have your guard of honour, but after that it's our time'.

Phil Foden is looking very comfortable and confident among this company. I believe he will get better and Liverpool are allowing him free reign to play his game. He does not look out of sorts at all. City have been great and it shows their hunger and hurt. They want this title back.

Man City going to within 21 points tonight - squeaky bum time. On, no, wait a minute...

Does anyone else think Pep will buy big and Foden will go down the pecking order again?

    Andy, Stockport

No Andy. He might spend big but I can't see it being on players to compete with Foden. You build teams around players like this.

I think City have just been better. They have moved the ball better, had better options on the ball.

Liverpool had started very, very well putting City under some pressure.

    See, Dion agrees.

I think it's fair to say City are making a point here.

It's not even that Liverpool have been poor. The home side have just been much, much better.

That's just total football. Foden was just outstanding. Brilliant from City, Liverpool just had no answer to the genius who's got a big future in the game.

Pep Guardiola spent the seconds leading up to that goal getting a ticking off from fourth official Mike Dean for throwing his water bottle about in fury at something he didn't like from his side.

The goal, though, had him on his feet applauding. Quite right too.

    This is becoming a rout.

What a fine goal this is. Foden plays the ball to the edge of the box and rolls off his marker to collect the return pass from De Bruyne before firing a lofted shot past Alisson.

He really is some player this kid.

A yellow card for what appears to be time-wasting from Mendy over a throw-in. Did he really take that long? Anthony Taylor thought so.

Is it a surprise anymore that Foden does something brilliant? There were some questioning why Pep has been seemingly so reluctant to get him more involved sooner. If you ask me, he's timing it perfectly.

What a finish! The run from Foden is amazing. He is right at the heart of Liverpool's defence and with no fear whatsoever takes his time and picks the right pass.

The real beauty of this goal is the run from De Bruyne. It just takes the eye line of two Liverpool players and Sterling does the rest.

City are making a point here.

Gabriel Jesus finds Phil Foden in the Liverpool half and the young midfielder plays a superb angled pass to Sterling, who does the rest with a neat lofted finish over Alisson and inside the near post.

Sterling against his old club too, just to add further spice.

Never let it be said Ederson doesn't take a risk or two. With Salah potentially in, he charges from his box to slide in and tackle. He doesn't get all the ball first time but manages to get back up on his feet quickly to complete the clearance. Maverick.
