Ash Williams: Can we at least have consistency on shirt pulls and wrestling at corners? Another ref might not have given that.

Nick Clayton: That was a very soft penalty, and Sterling was grabbing Gomez's shirt before the supposed foul

City living dangerously. They are robbed in midfield, allowing Liverpool to have a dart at the box through a combination of Fabinho and Mane. But the recovering Rodri does well to get back in there, tackle and clear.

Liz Tray: Can we say that Jesus is not improving? Sure, he gets some goals. So would anyone with that service. He's played nearly 100 games for us. He's 23 now. He does not understand how offside works. It's poor.

    Oh, Jesus.

De Bruyne finds the striker with a superb threaded pass into the box. He twists and turns to buy himself a yard but after doing so he shanks his effort awfully wide.

I like Gabriel. But he's no Sergio.

It is not quite as loud as the fireworks outside but Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp are making their voices heard at the Etihad.

There is nothing riding on this game of course but there is the opportunity for point scoring.

    Man City 1-0 Liverpool

A timely moment for a drinks break after that penalty. Pep Guardiola is incredibly animated as his players gather around him.

Klopp has plenty to say as well, but he's a lot more calm. That's what winning a title a few days ago will do for a man.

That's a penalty all day long. Sterling does absolutely fantastic. He has a little tussle with his old pal and he gets the better of him. Very good play from Sterling.

    Man City 1-0 Liverpool

Gomez protested the decision to give the penalty but he weas never going to get away with it. His wrestling of Sterling was enough to get him a booking.

    Kevin de Bruyne

    Never in doubt.

De Bruyne, never one for nerves, strokes the ball into the back of the net. First blood to the home side.

Here we go. Raheem Sterling takes the ball on his chest and wriggles with it looking for a shooting chance. He doesn't get the chance, though, because Joe Gomez is all over him and drags him down.

    Spot. Kick.

De Bruyne wants a corner. He won't get one, though, as his attempt to beat Trent Alexander-Arnold bounces back against him before pinged behind.

Hats off for the ball to KDB from Walker - a cross-field hit right into his stride.

  13. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 20 mins

    Man City 0-0 Liverpool

Best effort yet. Salah gathers near the edge of the box, moves along the 18-yard line and then pulls a shot back towards the corner of the net. He is unlucky to see it come back flush off the base of the post. For a second Mane looks like he might be follow-up but the ball gets away from him.

Gabriel Jesus again can't time his run right. The Brazilian moved a second early to collect De Bruyne's pass behind the Reds defence and the flag is up before he can try to test Alisson.

Tell you what, Benjamin Mendy can ping a cross. He swings an absolute belter of a delivery right into the corridor between defenders and keeper and is unfortunate that he doesn't then see a team-mate tap the ball in. Foden is the nearest to doing so, sliding in at the back post.

No goals, but it sure isn't dull.

Good tackle Aymeric Laporte. He had to get that right. It was to clean up a loose ball that was heading in the direction of the unmarked Sadio Mane in the box.

End to end. De Bruyne has a chance to fire a shot from the edge of the box but it is blocked. Liverpool charge down the other end and a cross is looped into the box for Mane, but he gets his header all wrong and puts it into the ground and wide.

De Bruyne isn't moving entirely comfortably. Looks like he might have taken a knock. Worrying for the home side.

  19. Postpublished at 9 mins

    Man City 0-0 Liverpool

First sight of Foden in full flight sees the young midfielder charge into the Liverpool half before feeding the ball on to Walker. The flying full-back has to check, though, and it kills the attack.

  20. Postpublished at 7 mins

    Man City 0-0 Liverpool

For a second it looks like Sadio Mane might be away down the left, but the long pass to release him takes him too wide and City's defence can reshape and prevent him causing any damage.
