As the Championship returned from its three-month absence last week, there was plenty to whet the appetite after a long time without the beautiful game.

Brentford pulled off a 2-0 win away at promotion rivals Fulham in the first game of the day while West Bromwich Albion topped the table despite their goalless draw against Birmingham City.

The play-off places hotted up thanks to Cardiff's 2-0 win against promotion-chasing Leeds, while Blackburn and Swansea both won as well to ensure the battle for sixth continues.

At the other end of the table, Luton prop up the table despite their draw against Preston while Middlesbrough's defeat by the Swans saw Jonathan Woodgate replaced by Neil Warnock as they slipped to a point off the relegation places.

Hull City's winless run continued as they lost to fellow strugglers Charlton, however second-from-bottom Barnsley won at QPR.

On Friday, Ollie Watkins scored his 23rd goal of the season as Brentford beat Championship leaders West Bromwich Albion at Griffin Park.

The Bees striker's close range finish in the 16th minute ensured Slaven Bilic's Baggies are still winless - and goalless - in their two games since the return of football following the coronavirus suspension.

Brentford's win put them to within five points of first place prior to Leeds taking on Fulham today, with Marcelo Bielsa's side level on points with the Baggies and with a game in hand.
