It's excellent again, Joao Cancelo weaves past a man and plays in Riyad Mahrez who takes his time, picks his spot and then sees his shot kicked out by Alex McCarthy. City get in another shot but it's brilliantly blocked.

David Silva then goes up for another header and clatters into Kyle Walker-Peters.

The game today is a hard one to judge because Manchester City are comfortable where they are and they'll have players out there that are thinking ahead - the FA Cup semi-final and the Champions League.

Another decent opening for the hosts as Nathan Redmond runs at City and is ushered inside, he shoots and fizzes one in low at Ederson. He holds it well.

The terrestrial TV overlords have got a decent game here as Nathan Redmond fires over on the counter-attack.

Saints are pressing very well and winning the ball back in great areas.

  7. 'City have to be more clinical'published at 19:33 British Summer Time 5 July 2020

    Southampton 1-0 Man City

Alex McCarthy has made some unbelievable saves. It's poor defending by Southampton for not clearing their lines.

That just sums up Man City's Premier League season. Chance, chance, chance and it doesn't go in. They have to be more clinical in that situation.

Pep will be thinking that his side should have taken at least one of that hat-trick of chances. They were all very presentable.

Wow! Well done Alex McCarthy, they got a bit of luck there off the post. We’re not used to seeing David Silva out jump people in the box but it’s a great save.

  10. GREAT SAVES!published at 30 mins

    Southampton 1-0 Manchester City

Blimey! Manchester City turn it up three gears. So much happened in a few seconds so I'll paraphrase:

    1. Raheem Sterling left-footed effort, good save from Alex McCarthy
    2. Fernandinho smashes off the post after Saints dither in the box
    3. David Silva free header from yet another cross, another good save

What a pick out from Joao Cancelo and it’s great movement in behind from Raheem Sterling and it’s really unlucky. I have no idea why Manchester City are thinking of getting rid of Cancelo - I’ve been very impressed every time I’ve seen him.

Paul: Ederson was ridiculously arrogant to be so far off his line for a start but goals like that with defending like that are why Man City are so far behind Liverpool this season.

Sam Hartles: That’s the perfect example of the bad side of Ederson. Why does he need to be standing a few yards outside the box? Yes he’s brilliant on the ball but he makes bad decisions on occasion

David Silva does well on the left to fire in a cross that is well cleared and then that is superb from Danny Ings!

Raheem Sterling gets in round the back, fires in a cross and it's going to be a tap-in but Ings of all people is there to hack it away.

When Manchester City move their full-backs into midfield, if you lose the ball in the centre of the pitch there’s no-one to really cover you because people are out of position but it is a great finish.

I’ve been really impressed with Southampton’s attitude and their pressing and the goal was a classic example of that. It is an absolutely fantastic finish.

Credit to Stuart Armstrong as well for his part in the goal - he was on Oleksandr Zinchenko in a flash, pressed him and won it high up the park.

    Southampton 1-0 Manchester City

I suppose Andy he's been lobbed once or twice in 100-odd games playing from that position and probably helped make countless more at the other end.

That's close! Joao Cancelo does well on the City right to shift a yard of space and fire the ball across goal, it's a shot that almost turns into a cross for Gabriel Jesus - who pokes it over.

    DRINKS.

Andy: Why do keepers DO that? Why was Ederson wandering around outside the D? I never understand why keepers drift out of their area like that, asking for trouble.

Kristian Ross: What a fantastic finish.... you have to question that even with Ederson’s impressive presence outfield why he was that far off his line?

The sort of goal that comes with a Lightning Seeds backing track built in. Truly superb.
