For his first goal, what a goal! Against Manchester City as well. Che Adams just notices Ederson is off his line and his first thought is to chip it.

It's probably 35 yards out and it's a wonderful finish. I'm happy for him because it's been a difficult year for him.

    Southampton 1-0 Manchester City

In the opening 18 minutes Manchester City centre forward Gabriel Jesus has only touched the ball eight times and not in Southampton's final third at all.

Zinchenko was very much in the middle, but that's how Pep wants his full-backs to tuck in isn't it? It was a bad place to lose the ball but all credit to Che Adams. It was by no means a given that City would concede from there!

Raheem Sterling is fuming. What a finish from Che Adams though. I don’t know what Oleksandr Zinchenko is doing thinking he can play in midfield. What execution using the bend to get it over him.

GOAL - Southampton 1-0 Manchester Citypublished at 16 mins

    Che Adams

What a way to score your first goal in the Premier League!

Oleksandr Zinchenko loses the ball in a bad area, it breaks into the path of Che Adams who has already spotted the fact that Ederson is miles off his line.

He's out of his area, in fact. Adams just pings it, effortlessly, over the keeper's head and in from what, 35 yards?!

  6. Postpublished at 14 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Manchester City

Almost! Saints break out of coverage and Danny Ings rolls his man on halfway. Stuart Armstrong is making a gut buster down the middle and a better pass would have put him in. Ings just got a bit of fade on it and City clear. Unlucky.

That was a strong few minutes for the Saints but they couldn't test Ederson. Nathan Redmond then nearly gets in but Aymeric Laporte defends well. Good game. Open.

    Southampton 0-0 Manchester City

A real stern exam of the City defence as James Ward-Prowse fizzes in back-to-back corners, delicious delivery on each occasion. He can ping a ball.

The men in blue defend well though.

    Southampton 0-0 Manchester City

Saints have a free-kick, a bit too far out for expert James Ward-Prowse so Nathan Redmond lines it up and thwacks one into the wall and over. Corner ball.

  10. 'A good opportunity'published at 19:07 British Summer Time 5 July 2020

    Southampton 0-0 Manchester City

    Danny Murphy
Former Liverpool and England midfielder on BBC One

Che Adams mishit the shot and it landed at the feet at Nathan Redmond but he wasn't ready for it. It's a good opportunity.

  11. CLOSE!published at 6 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Manchester City

It's been all City but it's the Saints who should be ahead! It all gets scruffy at the back, there's a huge swing and a miss from I think Aymeric Laporte, most unlike him.

Che Adams whacks it across goal and it should be pretty much a tap-in for Nathan Redmond but he then misses his kick as well...

David Silva has been a wonderful player. I had the pleasure of playing against him a few times and he will be sadly missed by the Man City fans. Phil Foden has all the ability to fill his shoes, though.

    Southampton 0-0 Manchester City

I have a bit of an issue with possession football with no end product, as practiced by some teams, because it's, well, dull. But the way City play is just a delight on the eyes isn't it. Movement, zipping first-time passes around in triangles. They look the business already in these opening stages. Even without Kevin de Bruyne.

Foden is on the bench tonight alongside fellow youth prospects Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Tommy Doyle. Proper name.

  15. 'Man City have managed Foden superbly'published at 19:02 British Summer Time 5 July 2020

    Southampton 0-0 Man City

    Karen Carney
Former England and Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

They [Man City] have had to be very clever in terms of how they manage to keep him [Phil Foden] at the club. I think they are doing the right thing. He is at Manchester City, and to break into that team, is very hard.

Secondly, he is only young and he is going to be the future of Man City over the next 10 years. Why burn him out in a Premier League season that is done and dusted? Get him slowly into the team and play him in multiple positions. Let him grow without the pressure and I think they have managed him superbly.

What a pass that is! Ederson drills one a good 50 yards to Bernardo Silva, all across the floor. Ridiculous.

Absolutely unnecessary volume from the guys on the PA system here. I know the fans are at home but they don't need to be able to hear the build-up from the front room.

It is difficult to come back from a serious injury and Danny Ings is a chancer. He's expecting defenders to make mistakes, he is an intelligent footballer. He will want that Golden Boot. You have to have an attitude to come back from a serious injury and I like that about him.
