  2. 'Haaland is a £100m player'published at 22:18 British Summer Time 7 September 2020

    Northern Ireland 1-5 Norway

Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough: "I'm disappointed, of course I am. We knew with the loss of the likes of Jonny [Evans] and Jamal [Lewis], we would find it tough against this strike force and they were ruthless tonight.

"They were clinical in front of goal. Erling Haaland is a £100m player, isn't he? Not bad genetics! He's turned into a decent player. When he grows up, he'll be alright won't he?

"We can't give chances like that away. We got ourselves back into it immediately which is a great response but then straight from the kick-off they score again. It was two diagonal balls that we got done by.

"It's those small things that you hope when the players are up to speed and into the stride of things, with more game time, will sort. Far too much space in those situations so it's something we have to take on the chin."

On missing Evans and Lewis: "It was one of those things that in the last couple of days we had to contain with. I still thought Daniel Ballard did alright tonight. We had to bring him off at half-time because we couldn't take any risks with a tight hamstring. He's a boy who made his debut then a few days later, had to do it all over again having not played a game for a while. It was Michael Smith's first game of the season too so to come into a game against that quality is tough.

"We didn't throw the towel in. We're a group that will be strong together and will stick together. You can't say we didn't work hard. There are things to brush up on, which we will do. When we get back together for Bosnia next month, we're in a much stronger place."

  3. Haaland looking forward to watching his goals backpublished at 22:11 British Summer Time 7 September 2020

Norway striker Erling Haaland to Sky Sports: "I enjoyed both [goals]."

On his manager saying he can reach Messi/Ronaldo levels: "That's huge words, I appreciate these words.

"I want to try to get as best I can, work hard every day and enjoy my life as much as possible. Tonight I enjoyed the game - that's why I play football.

"Today I hit the ball perfectly. I'm looking forward to seeing them again."

Would he play in Premier League? Will he watch Liverpool-Leeds on Saturday?

"I'm very happy in the Bundesliga. You never know what will happen in the future. I like to watch the Premier League so will probably watch that game."

  4. 'It was Norway's night'published at 22:04 British Summer Time 7 September 2020

    Northern Ireland 1-5 Norway

Northern Ireland's Paddy McNair, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was very disappointing. We went behind very early on then we went 3-1 down again and it was a kick in the teeth. They scored just after half-time and that killed it.

"Jonny [Evans] is of course a good player so any team would miss him. The players who came in for us are also very good players. I don't think we can blame players who came in. It was just a tough night.

"We knew coming into the game, they were very strong up front. I think they had three shots on target in the first half and scored all three. It was Norway's night."

Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was a tough night, a really tough night. Physically, Norway looked so much better prepared for the game. Players were shuffled around in different positions to what they are used to. But when you come up against a player like Erling Haaland, it compounds everything the lads were playing against. I think it's better that it happens now and you can focus on Bosnia and try and put those things right.

Roberto Mancini has lost only two of his first 21 managerial games with Italy, the same as Marcello Lippi.

Northern Ireland were given a lesson. They didn't help ourselves early on. The finishing from Norway was top class. NI couldn't live with their pace, their strength and couldn't get in behind to trouble their defence. NI didn't have the quality, the guile, or the passing to cause them any problems. But Norway were just so clinical.

Scotland have beaten a makeshift Czech side 2-1 tonight.

In case you missed it earlier, there was coronavirus in the Czech camp so they had to find a completely different squad of Czech-based players - and a different manager. Only two of the squad had won caps before - and one of them was a 36-year-old had retired from international football.

It is the first time in 20 years Scotland have won an away game after conceding the first goal.

    Gerry Taggart
Ex-Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio 5 live

They were blown away by a very, very functional Norwegian side. There is a lot of thinking for Ian Baraclough to do going into this next game against Bosnia. He's seen stuff tonight - a lot of bad things. I'm trying to be polite but there were some poor performances from some players.
