  1. 'Everyone's giving the ball away'published at 19:54 British Summer Time 8 September 2020

    Denmark 0-0 England

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Tottenham and England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

The game started with a high tempo but everyone is giving the ball away and there are a few free-kicks being given away.

Nobody seems to be able to get their foot on the ball yet.

The passing has been very poor, as it has been from Denmark as well, but England can't put three or four passes together.

  2. Postpublished at 8 mins

    Denmark 0-0 England

This is the problem with not having a naturally left-footed outfield player in the team.

Eric Dier steps up from the back and tries to find Jadon Sancho down the flank with a pass from his weaker foot, but plonks it straight out of play.

    Awful.

No idea what Southgate is playing at here. You can't play Rice and Phillips in the same line up, epecially with 3 at the back and expect up to open teams up. We should be dominating and intimidating teams like Denmark. There is very little to scare them on this team sheet.

    James, Kent

The abuse for the decision to include Kalvin Phillips is ridiculous considering the vast majority of those commenting will have no basis to determine whether Grealish is a better player than him or not (not to mention that they play different roles)

    Jimmy Lew, Leeds

No left sided players in the team is ridiculous! Why no Mings?

    Denmark 0-0 England

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Tottenham and England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

England have always been quite flexible under Gareth Southgate.

I'm sure if there are any problems he'll be able to change it.

    4-3-3, 5-3-2?

Looks like the latter when England don't have the ball.

Happy to sit back with Denmark hogging possession early on.

Skully: England midfield 3 of Rice, Dier and Phillips. I bet Europe is quaking in their boots

Tom Bray: How is Eric Dier in the England team over Jack Grealish!?! An absolute joke the guy can’t even get in the spurs team and he is playing ahead of one of the best players from last year!

Paul: maitland-niles can play left back, just as he did in fa cup semi final and final which arsenal won. He played great at LB. he also shut out adama traore when away to wolves. But no, we put a RB in trippier at LB when he's got nothing but his set pieces. Poor.

Denmark have won just one of their eight competitive meetings with England (D2 L5), winning 1-0 in a 1984 Euro qualifier.

However, this is the first competitive meeting between the sides since the 2002 World Cup last 16 stage, when England produced one of their best knockout performances to win 3-0.

Re Benched Grealish: Southgate would have found it difficult picking someone who wasn't in the original squad over someone who was. Worrying that our national manager can't make the tough decisions, for fear of being shown up.

    Frank - West Mids

Sorry to say it but for all his plaudits from the World Cup, Southgate fails to inspire me. The WC saw us beaten whenever we played a top 10 team and he consistently picks players who are never going to be good enough at the top level - Pickford, Walker, Barkley. He leaves the likes of Saka and Maitland Niles out of the original squad entirely, then starts a Championship player. Don't get him.

  12. Southgate hoping for right headlinespublished at 19:37 British Summer Time 8 September 2020

    Denmark v England (19:45 BST)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer in Copenhagen

England manager Gareth Southgate took a stroll alone with his thoughts around Copenhagen's Parken Stadion before kick-off - and he will be hoping focus will be on the football tonight.

Southgate's pre-match preparations suffered the distraction of the young pair Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood being sent home for breaking Covid-19 protocols in Iceland.

Here in Copenhagen, he will be hoping debutants Kalvin Phillips and Coady give him some more palatable food for thought in this Uefa Nations League tie.

Cristiano Ronaldo is one goal off a piece of history tonight.

The Portugal captain will become the first European man to ever score 100 international goals if he bags in Sweden tonight.

The only player to ever score more international goals in men's football than Ronaldo is Iran legend Ali Daei, with 109.

I have the choice of U21 football where they scored six goals last match... Or watch a Southgate managed senior where even if they matched the result it would still be boring. Choices, choices... Wonder how much the negativity performance wise is on the players, manager or attack coaches. I turned off the Iceland game in disgust.

    Dave.

I have literally fallen asleep reading that team selection. Not an ounce of creativity in midfield.

    Stuart, Sutton Coldfield

Jack Grealish must be wondering what he has to do to get in his England team, I feel he would really complement England's front three. He is the creative and hardworking player England need in the middle.

  15. 'We have to keep winning football matches'published at 19:30 British Summer Time 8 September 2020

    Denmark v England (19:45 BST)

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate tells Sky Sports: "We have had total focus and dealt with everything yesterday. As soon as we left the hotel n Iceland, the players had trained well and we have to make sure people are talking about our football after tonight.

"I was fortunate to hand two players their first England shirt today and we spoke about what the badge mean and how you leave the shirt in a better way that you got it. I am pleased for Conor Coady and Kalvin Phillips who have had a longer wait than others and it may mean more to them.

"I did not need to build the game up in their minds but it was about giving them the belief they can go out there like they do for their clubs.

"We think it is good to play different systems and it suits the personnel we have. It is a good time to learn more.

"We have to keep winning football matches, that is what we have been tasked with doing. We have to make sure we prepare the team with the right mentality to win the game."

The Belgium playmaker's award breaks a two-year run of Liverpool winners, with Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah having claimed the prize over the previous two seasons.

"This is a big honour, to be voted by your colleagues, competitors from other teams who you always play against on the field. That they vote for you for best player; it's amazing," he said.

"It's maybe strange that I'm the first one at City, seeing all the good players who played there before and who are still playing. But it's nice to represent the club."

Anyone who has watched Phillips knows he deserves his place tonight. Let's hope Southgate deploys him correctly so the Yorkshire Pirlo can prove the 'no premier league, not good enough' doubters wrong.

    Andrew, Gateshead

If I was Grealish I would Ebay the training gear I had been given this week and throw my lot in with the Republic

    Russ Worcester

Not sure what I'm more frustrated at. Not starting Grealish or Insisting on starting Pickford. Southgate clearly has his favorites imo. Pickford is definitely in 'if the face fits' category.

  20. 'Part of Southgate's long-term plan'published at 19:21 British Summer Time 8 September 2020

    Denmark v England (19:45 BST)

    Rob Green
Former West Ham and England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's a long-term plan, Southgate mentioned that in his press conference.

The formations in games in modern day football can change in the blink of an eye. You can go out playing with a three, four or a five at the back but it's a lot more versatile now, the players are much more versatile.

They're trying to find people who can fit into each role.
