England's hopes of qualifying for the Nations League finals were ended by defeat against Belgium in Leuven.

Harry Kane became the first player to make 50 England caps while playing for Tottenham and the first outfield player to make his first 50 England appearances all while at the same club since John Terry with Chelsea.

England midfielder Jack Grealish talking to Sky Sports: "I absolutely loved it. This is what I have been waiting for, these are the games I have dreamed of. I have grew up all life wanting to play for England.

"We wanted to win tonight though so I am devastated we didn't get the win.

"I knew this was my chance to impress. These are the things I love, the pressure of wanting to do well.

"The last 24 hours I have been watching clips of my favourite players. I do that every game. I have been buzzing. I watch clips of Kevin de Bruyne, Philippe Coutinho - loads - players in my positions, Done it as a little kid and still do it today, that's what gets me going.

"The most difficult thing is trying to get the chemistry with the teammates. When you come here you only have 10 days to build that. It just clicks with some players though.

"The manager has been brilliant with me. There are world class players in my position."

England

England manager Gareth Southgate talking to Sky Sports: "We don't like losing, but enormous credit to the team, all the way through they created problems and defended resiliently.

"I thought we were excellent. I couldn't have enough praise for the players.

"We had a different profile of players but in those positions I thought Jack Grealish had an absolutely outstanding game. Losing Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford, we lose a lot of speed. But I can't fault the attacking play until the last chance.

"We created far more opportunities than we did at Wembley. I saw what I knew I would see from Jack, someone with the bravery to play. He took the ball in tight areas, his technique was good, we knew he would buy a lot of free-kicks. I thought he was outstanding, he should be delighted. I explained to him what we wanted to see when we brought him in in September.

"Today was a great game for us to see him in. I couldn't speak highly enough of his performance.

"If you play at the level we did tonight, I think we will win more games than we lose."

Belgium

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez: "It was a really good game of football, two strong teams who know each other very well and played each other four times since the 2018 World Cup.

"We got the early lead then we had to suffer and see the press and risk that England took. We could not utelise that in our advantage and we defended really well and showed a good focus. that pleases me a lot. We used to see a lot of good things on the ball, being pretty but it was a good all round performance.

"You need to give credit to England, they did very well in the second half and pushed us high up. We can use the opportunity of counter attacking but we gave the ball away cheaply. We were always in control at 2-0, sometimes it can be dangerous, you feel comfortable but we defended Thibaut Courtois's goal very well.

"We want to work towards the third win in Leuven on Wednesday. Denmark are a very good side, the key is being good in what you do and we are looking forward to that game."

Philip West: I’m certainly not turning on Gareth Southgate, but I’d love to see him be more attack-minded with his selections, and be more positive from a tactical point of view. We certainly have the players to hurt opposition teams: let them loose!

England

England captain Harry Kane talking to Sky Sports: "We were dominant.We were unlucky to concede the two goals.

"A deflection and I don't think the second was a free-kick. A lot of positives to take but it will give us confidence.

"If we play like this going forward, we will win the majority of games for sure

"Jack Grealish is a fantastic player. You can see his qualities on the ball. I am sure he will get plenty of opportunities in an England shirt.

"We haven't won a major trophy for a long time and that gives us a major carrot. With the squad we have and the players we have, we have to have full belief."

England

This was England’s 10th defeat in 48 matches under Gareth Southgate, making him the first manager to lose 10 matches with the Three Lions since Sven-Goran Eriksson, who lost 10 of his 67 games in charge.

Belgium

Belgium goalscorer Dries Mertens: "It is my home town and I am happy to play here and score. I never played in the first-team here but I played until the age of 11 so it is always special.

"You hope to hit it good and score.

"Denmark scored in the last minute so they will be happy and come here with full confidence. We have to be prepared for Wednesday and have to give everything."

Two Christian Eriksen penalties - including one in injury-time - gives Denmark a 2-1 win over Iceland.

It means Wednesday will see a straight shootout between Belgium and Denmark for a spot at the Nations League finals.

A draw would be enough for Roberto Martinez's side.

Victory for Belgium.

Defeat means England will not be at the Nations League finals next October.

Nearly the third!

Romelu Lukaku trundles forward, Eric Dier is bamboozled and does not know which way to turn.

It allows the Belgium striker to smash a shot from the edge of the area which drifts just wide of the post.

They just haven't got that finishing touch tonight have they? For all England's dominance in the game, the Belgium back three have defended well.

Thought this was the opening England were looking for.

Bukayo Saka does well to squeeze out at cross, Harry Kane pokes a shot at goal but again Jan Vertonghen is in the right place at the right time to block the shot from his old Spurs team-mate.

Change for Belgium.

Off comes goalscorer Dries Mertens to be replaced by Leicester midfielder Dennis Praet.

Harry Kane takes aim from range but flashes a shot way wide.
