Gabriel Jesus put in a superb performance for Manchester City against Real Madrid as he got a goal and an assist

Manchester City progressed to the quarter-finals after they produced an impressive performance to beat Real Madrid 2-1 for a 4-2 aggregate win, although Real's cause was not helped by an usually poor performance in defence by Raphael Varane.

Meanwhile, Juventus failed to progress despite beating Lyon 2-1 on the night. A 1-0 win for the French side in the first leg meant they progressed on away goals.

Manchester City and Lyon will meet in the last eight a week today.

Not since 2007 have Barcelona failed to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, when they were knocked out by Liverpool.

Despite having the likes of Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi in their ranks, Barcelona found themselves frustrated as Liverpool went through on away goals after a 2-2 draw on aggregate.

Kevinaymla: As a city fan i hope they win, they'd be easier to beat than Bayern. but if Chelsea do manage it, my Chelsea mates will never shut up about it.

Eight years on and I still can't believe John Terry appeared in a full Chelsea kit, including boots, shin pads and sock tape, to collect the Champions League trophy in that 2012 final despite being suspended.

Frank Lampard played in that memorable 2012 Champions League final at the Allianz Arena

I've teased the comeback but, let's be honest, it is going to take a superhuman effort from Chelsea to turn this one around.

Only four times has a deficit of three or more goals been overturned, but no team has done so after losing the first leg at home.

Still, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is not throwing the towel in.

"We have to believe we could have the opportunity to do something special." Lampard said.

"It is a huge task, no doubt, but games have turned to big degrees, some famous games and great games."

  17. Sarri sacked by Juvepublished at 19:04 British Summer Time 8 August 2020

Maurizio Sarri paid the price for failing to reach the Champions League quarter-finals after he was sacked as Juventus boss earlier today.

Sarri guided Juventus to a ninth straight Serie A title but they were knocked out of the Champions League by Lyon last night.

Juve won 2-1 in Turin on Friday but the French side progressed on away goals.

Former Chelsea boss Sarri was appointed last year and although Juventus did win their domestic title, the football they played was pretty terrible at times.
