  1. Guardiola looking for controlpublished at 19:29 British Summer Time 15 August 2020

Man City v Lyon (20:00 BST)

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Tottenham and England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Pep Guardiola is looking to control the game. He wants to take control of the football.

Looking at the Lyon midfield, they're all young players and obviously not the most experienced. It's a huge game for them, against three experienced midfielders, and Guardiola wants to take control of the football from the off.

  2. Pre-match factspublished at 19:28 British Summer Time 15 August 2020

    • This will be the third Champions League meeting between Manchester City and Lyon; no side have City faced on more occasions in the competition without a victory than Lyon (P2 W0 D1 L1).
    • Having failed to win any of their first six Champions League games against English sides (D3 L3), Lyon remain unbeaten in their last four against such opposition (W2 D2), including a win and a draw against Man City in last season's group stages.
    • Manchester City have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for a fourth time in the last five seasons (the only exception being 2016-17); however, they have only progressed from one of their previous three quarter-final appearances, knocking out PSG in 2015-16.
    • Lyon are the first French side to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League since Monaco in 2016-17, while this is their first appearance at this stage of the competition since 2009-10. The French side have progressed from just one of their four Champions League quarter-final ties - eliminating Bordeaux in 2009-10.

Rob Munro: I've seen Bayern as the outright favourites since they battered every team in London, but now they've humiliated Barca like that I can't see anyone else winning. Not even a top City side.

If Pep doesn't win the Champions League he deserves to be sacked. Underachieving with the money spent.

  5. So Lyon... should be a breeze for City?published at 19:21 British Summer Time 15 August 2020

The French side had won only four of their past 12 official matches in all competitions, however they did defeat Juventus to reach this stage.

And (a big 'and') they drew and beat City in the Champions League group stage last season.

Here's French football expert Julien Laurens:

"City should be worried after the results last season when, OK, it was a different Lyon, and the key players have all left.

"But if you are Lyon, you look at those games and say 'we have done it already, maybe we can produce it again'.

"They will have the same approach, defend deep and exploit any mistakes that City could make and be very clinical.

"They certainly believe. No one thought they could beat Juventus and Cristiano [Ronaldo] over two legs and they did it."

Man City v Lyon (20:00 BST)

Manchester City make a bit of a reshuffle from the win over Real Madrid.

Centre-back Eric Garcia replaces attacking midfielder Phil Foden, so captain Fernandinho moves from the back into midfield.

Benjamin Mendy is back from suspension, but he is only on the bench as Joao Cancelo keeps his place at left-back.

Man City: Ederson, Walker, Garcia, Laporte, Cancelo, Fernandinho, Rodrigo, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Sterling, Jesus.

Lyon are unchanged from the side who knocked out Juventus. That means Hassan Aouar has recovered from his ankle knock, while Karl Toko Ekambi is again preferred to Moussa Dembele up front.

Lyon: Lopes, Denayer, Marcelo, Marcal, Dubois, Cornet, Caqueret, Guimaraes, Aouar, Toko Ekambi, Depay.

Liz Tray: How is it helpful, Max (18.59) to sneer at how much money has been spent on the defence? I can't help but notice it's only City teams that get added up in this way, when it could be done to any top team. Jealousy is unbecoming. Almost a dull team selection tonight

  14. 'There is no second chance' - Guardiolapublished at 18:55 British Summer Time 15 August 2020

Pep Guardiola's men are quite used to successes in cup competitions which, by in large, are one-off knockout matches.

This is what the Catalan coach has had to say about this format in Lisbon:

"In England, when you play in the FA Cup or the Carabao Cup it is just one game. Every game is a final.

"Our players are used to these games. There is no second chance. You are in or you're out.

"That's what it is and it means our approach will be completely different."

Manchester City v Lyon is the final match of what has been a fascinating, dramatic and absorbing set of quarter-finals in this new temporary format.
