Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton
The goal came from a simple turnover in midfield - as was pointed out both Saints full-backs were totally out of the picture and it was an easy enough chance to convert for Palace.
Kudos to James McCarthy for winning it on halfway.
Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton
Work for the visitors to do. One moment of class from Wilf Zaha the difference.

Southampton need to change it, Crystal Palace are happy.
Southampton are switching the ball to the full-backs and they're out there on their own. Palace are allowing that because they're able to get out to it and defend it.
It's so comfortable for Vicente Guaita in the Palace goal.

Will Smallbone was darting in the box but the defender was too strong for him. For me, it is never a penalty.
Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton
Good from Will Smallbone again, his cross is a dangerous one and Scott Dann has to head it away.
Dann is somehow only 33, it feels like he's been playing for years and years and years...
Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton
Half-hearted shouts for a penalty from Southampton as Will Smallbone tumbles but he was already on his way down, and it was outside the box. Nothing given.

When Southampton get good possession of the ball Crystal Palace are happy to sit and watch and wait - and then they go and pressure.
If you know what you're doing as a team it is so hard to break that down.
Southampton are a litle bit pedestrian in possession and the passing needs to be quicker.
Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton
Palace almost send in Jordan Ayew over the top of that generous defensive line but he can't quite bring it down. It's not a bad game at all this!
Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton
It's a risk/reward situation I guess. Southampton's defence looks shoddy again as Palace have three men free from a set-piece - but they were all well offside.
Well judged.

Paul: Southampton suicidally pushing their defence so far up. Even with Zaha and townsend against them with their pace. Walker-Peters was so far away from Zaha for that goal he wasn't even in same postcode. Appalling.
Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton
Danny Ings helps on a header from a tight angle as Southampton continue to look a threat but it was always going to be tough to score from there.

Crystal Palace have come into the game more since scoring. They've taken confidence from that.
In their defensive shape they know that, if they stay narrow, the wide men are negated a bit and the one pass they need to deal with is the full-backs bombing on. But they know they have time to get across to that threat.
Overall, I think Roy Hodgson will be quite pleased with not just the goal but how their shape is working out.
Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton
Palace are the side with the makeshift defence but it's the Saints who are struggling! Scott Dann is able to win a header from a corner all too easily and Alex McCarthy has to make a scrambling save with Jordan Ayew threatening to pounce.
The flag is belatedly raised but that was soft defending.
Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton
Last season, it took Wilfired Zaha 13 PL appearances to score his first league goal on 23 November. That was also the last Palace goal until today that Andros Townsend provided the assist for.
They're both up and running straight away now.
Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton
Southampton have had 70% of the possession in this game but that goal came right out of the blue.
Plenty of time to turn it all around though.

Ben: Next time I'm trying to compliment someone's fashion sense I'll tell them they look as smooth as Southampton's new home kit. Absolute belter
Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton
One shot, one goal. Wilfried Zaha struggled in front of goal last season and if they can get him back firing it will be a massive boost.

While Southampton had the ball and the control, it's the full-backs pressing on that leaves them exposed - and that's what Crystal Palace were aware of.
It was a brilliant cross and a wonderful finish. Wilfried Zaha had a lot of time to think about that and could have easily missed.
