Penalty! No, sorry, my bad. Jumped the gun a bit there.

The game is under way at the Etihad.

Be very interesting to see how Man City fare up top today. No Aguero, no Jesus. Looks like we'll have Raheem Sterling as, what, a false nine?

I mean, to be fair, they still have a pretty handy front three.

The teams are heading out at the Etihad. The handball/penalty debate will rumble on, but right now I've got a whole other game of football to talk about.

  4. 'I don't want to be fined'published at 16:24 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    Tottenham 1-1 Newcastle

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Jose Mourinho speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "The only thing I wanted to say is my team played very well. I want to be on the bench next match and I don't want to be fined (so I don't want to talk about the penalty).

"I think the boy (Karl) Darlow (Newcastle goalkeeper) was the man of the match, unless you want to give it to some other people that are not a player.

"Their goalkeeper is there is save. He was fantastic."

At some point tonight, he's going to have a moment to himself and absolutely blow his top like Anger in Inside Out.

  5. 'It is a total nonsense'published at 16:22 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    Tottenham 1-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce talking to Sky Sports: "I can understand why Spurs will go beserk and Roy Hodgson reacted like he did. It is a total nonsense, we should be jumping through hoops but I would be devastated if that was us. Maybe Roy is right, maybe we all need to get together. The decisions are ruining the spectacle. We have to get together as managers and say this must stop.

"If our goalkeeper didn't play as well first half they would have been out of sight. Second half we were better and posed a bit of a threat. Our goalkeeper has got us a point and a decision that went our way."

And this is the manager of the side who have just gotten out of jail because of the decision.

  6. Ruben Dias on his way to Man City?published at 16:20 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    Man City v Leicester (16:30BST)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the Etihad Stadium

The noises around Manchester City signing Benfica centre-half Ruben Dias are getting louder.

Dias made what seemed to be a farewell appearance for the Portuguese club last night, with post-match interviews indicating he would be leaving, without any confirmation.

Nicolas Otamendi is set to move in the other direction and he doesn't make the City bench today.

City have been looking at a right-sided centre-half all summer - they have spoken with Benfica about Dias.

It seems to be just a matter of time.

  7. Handball interpretationpublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    Tottenham 1-1 Newcastle

Just in case, you were here and wondering what all this handball fuss is about, this precis of the laws of the game was initially posted in yesterday's Premier League live:

    • Hand/arm is clearly away from the body and outside the "body line" .
    • Player clearly leans into the path of the ball.
    • Ball travels some distance.
    • Ball touches hand/arm that is clearly raised above the shoulder.
    • Player falls and the hand/arm is extended laterally or vertically away from the body.
    • Deflection clearly makes no difference to the ball touching a hand/arm that is clearly extended away from the body and/or above the shoulder

This is not football, the game has become a joke. Change the rules now it is a farce.

    Neil, Leeds

Refs have become robots, no common sense applied. Peter Bankes (the referee) would have gained far more respect if he'd turned it down.

    Phill Cottam

The problem is not with VAR. The problem is not with how VAR is used. The problem is not with the officials who are implementing the rules. The problem is the RULES.

It just frustrates me. At the end of the game I want to talk about football. Instead we are talking about VAR and the handball rule. I would take the handball rule away from the VAR officials. I like it that the referee goes to the monitor because the players will respect it more. I don't blame the referee, I blame VAR. That is the problem.

I've supported Spurs for 30 years - but VAR is making me want to stop watching football altogether.

    Alex

Glorious. Great pen. Spurs fans will blame the world but they should've been 4-0 up. Whose fault is that?

How ironic, the reporter's name is Sham...

I totally get it's the law, but you've got to be consistent. Jose Mourinho will be asking why they did not decide to check the handball incident with Jamaal Lascelles moments before, which looked more of a penalty. Eric Dier was looking the other way.

So, apparently, it wasn't Harry Kane getting sent off at the end. It was Spurs goalkeeping coach Nuno Santos. Rest easy, fantasy football players with the Tottenham striker.

    Tottenham 1-1 Newcastle

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

The Premier League went through the various rule changes during a pre-season conference call a few weeks ago.

At the time they admitted there would be more penalties this season due to the new handball rule.

I doubt the revised interpretation is winning any friends amongst the players and managers.

    Or the fans, Si.

  16. Postpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

I think they might need to change the advertising for the Premier League. Do you have an arm fetish? Want to see numerous replays of footballs hitting them, followed by some "nonsense" decision making? Then this is the league for you.

Ashley: Yes we need VAR, but that was never a handball by Dier, clearly didn’t know where the ball was! Change the rule NOW!

Tom McQuillan: Will there be any repercussions for the referee? Of course not. The FA protect them despite constantly getting these decisions wrong. They have too much power.

Adam Salter: In all seriousness, accidental handball should not be given as a penalty. Give it the hockey treatment and award an indirect free kick on the corner of the box on the byline.

We're still trying to pick the bones out of exactly what happened after the whistle as regards the red card. The ref definitely showed it to someone, but we're not 100% certain who. Madness.

  19. Postpublished at 16:02 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

Chucking me a live grenade there, Sham. Thanks very much!

I mean, it's not a penalty is it? Not in a way any of us want. VAR and this new law have decided it is. But it's not.

I suspect we'll have some Jose rage for you shortly.

    Excellent.

Pick the bones out of that one.

Over to you, Mr Phil Dawkes.
