Adam Hopkins: How many teams play with this little ambition? Leeds have come up to attack, Brighton are transformed into a great little team, even West Brom had the ambition to score three against Chelsea yesterday. Football has moved on from this prehistoric playing style!

Paul Daglish: Can people now see why the majority of Toon fans don’t want him (Steve Bruce) as manager?

The only positive Newcastle fans can take from that first half is that they haven't had to endure a 600-mile round trip to witness their team's capitulation.

Re Gary 14:51 - Steve Bruce has done a good job since Rafael Benitez left. He had no money to spend at the time of taking over. They could have appointed someone else and gone down. Saying he is out depth is totally unfair. He's a done a good job.

Under Rafa, Newcastle's defence was well-drilled and disciplined. Over the course of last season, you could see the hangover of Rafa's training slipping away. Much of Bruce's "success" was due to him being left a squad that was trained to punch above their weight, along with a few injections of creativity (Almiron and Saint-Maximin). We survived despite Bruce's tactical naivety.

What an embarrassment from Brucie's boys in the first half. We need to step things up in the second half urgently.

  13. 'It was a really tight game'published at 15:01 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    Sheff Utd 0-1 Leeds

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

"We had the best chances. We should score the first goal, they had a couple of long range chances and a couple of free kicks in dangerous areas. They are a decent team, a high energy, high tempo side and I thought we matched that. It’s all about creating chances and putting them in the back of the net. We did the first bit but couldn’t do the second bit.

"They found a bit of magic from [Jack] Harrison even though I think it is a foul on Sander Berge.

"If we score the first goal the complexion of the game changes .

"It was totally new playing in a back three for Ethan [Ampadu] and I thought he was excellent. There has not been much chance to integrate the players so they have to get on with it which they did.

"The shape, organisation and work rate was good. You can’t create the chance we have done today and be sitting on the crossbar but yet again opportunities to score and be clinical, which Leeds were and we weren’t, decide the game.

"Jack [O'Connell] goes in for an operation on Wednesday and will be out for the a season. It is a huge blow for us and him. It’s not going our way at the moment but it is a time to stand up stick your chest out and show what you are about in a lot of ways. Bravery in and out of possession, brave as a team. We have enough characters in there. It was a really tight game and the players will be thinking it’s one that has got away.

"I’d love one of those games where we get absolutely battered and the keeper makes save after save and we break away and nick one."

  14. 'Hopefully Bamford can continue to show his quality'published at 14:59 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    Sheff Utd 0-1 Leeds

    Leeds United

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa, speaking to BBC Sport: "I have already experienced a Yorkshire derby in the Championship but it is different in the Premier League. When there are no fans it is hard to compare.

"The games are very competitive and it is hard to impose yourself. In the first half we could have concede as well as scored. In the second we dominated more. The difference between the two teams was not a lot."

On suggestions Patrick Bamford might struggle in the Premier League: "There are a lot of people who thought contrary to what you say. The league season is very long. Hopefully he can continue to show his obvious qualities."

On keeping a clean sheet: "It is an achievement we were looking for, to not concede. I think we defended well, with few errors. Having said that, our rivals did have opportunities. We grew."

  15. 'A small but just difference to deserve the win'published at 14:53 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    Sheff Utd 0-1 Leeds

    Leeds United

    Marcelo BielsaImage source, Getty Images

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa, speaking to BT Sport: "It was a just result. The first half was pretty even. We could have scored but also conceded. The second half was a lot better for us. I think we created a small but just difference to deserve the victory.

"We managed to attack better. We had close to six or seven opportunities. In that sense the offensive situation was better."

On taking Rodrigo off: "A few minutes were left and I had to sub Bamford or him and Bamford is a very useful player at set-pieces against. He helps us defend them. It wasn't a good decision as Bamford was tired. I should have kept Rodrigo on the field.

"When the game is finishing anything that happens is hard to modify. In general all managers are very anxious towards the end of a game."

On signings: "We only like to talk about signings when they are made as a lot can happen."

First time I've enjoyed watching Spurs since our Champions League tie with Borussia Dortmund. Lo Celso and Hojbjerg are different class.

Watching Steve Bruce manage my team is making me nostalgic for us under Alan Pardew in 2014. Nice guy completely out his depth.
