We've got two world class left-backs. I don't mind changing my shape to fit good players in. Andy Robertson sounds extremely confident. His CV is fantastic. I can see vast improvement in Kieran Tierney in the years to come as well

  2. Israel's attacking threatpublished at 19:34 British Summer Time 4 September 2020

    Scotland v Israel (19:45)

Israel's recent form might be poor, but they have three players up front who could really test Scotland's defence.

Eran Zahavi has scored 13 goals in his last 12 games for Israel, including hat-tricks against Austria and Latvia in back-to-back European qualifiers.

Hoffenheim striker Moanes Dabbur, formerly of RB Salzburg, scored twice for the Austrian club against Celtic in the Europa League a few seasons back, before moving on to Sevilla. Now in Germany, he has retained his scoring touch.

Shon Weissman scored 30 goals for Wolfsberger to dinish as the Austrian Bundesliga's top scorer. Just before heading to Glasgow, he signed a four-year deal with Spanish club Real Valladolid as he looks to add to his four Israeli caps so far.

  4. Will momentum be disrupted?published at 19:28 British Summer Time 4 September 2020

    Scotland v Israel (19:45)

After a difficult start to life as Scotland coach, the feeling after the last game against Kazakhstan was that Steve Clarke's imprint on the team was becoming a bit clearer.

Scotland have won their last three games - against San Marino, Cyprus and Kazakhstan - and the team was becoming settled.

However, we're now 10 months down the line with the coronavirus pandemic throwing up all sorts of different problems for Clarke, such that any progress could well now be disrupted. We'll soon find out whether that's the case.

    Ever the optimist, eh?

  6. Dress rehearsal for play-off?published at 19:23 British Summer Time 4 September 2020

    Scotland v Israel (19:45)

These teams will do battle again next month, with a chance to play either Norway or Serbia for a place at the Euros next summer.

Steve Clarke insisted this week that tonight's match will have no bearing on next month's encounter. In his favour, is the fact Scotland lost to Israel in their last Nations League opener, but beat them in the return at Hampden to win the section.

However, a dispiriting loss tonight would really dampen the national mood and confidence ahead of an era-defining match.

  8. Clarke says he has 'tweaked system'published at 19:18 British Summer Time 4 September 2020

    Scotland v Israel (19:45)

Scotland manager Steve Clarke on Sky Sports: "I've thought it for a long, long time. It's great to have both Kieran Tierney and Andy Robertson available.

"We've had a little tweak of the system. It doesn't know what they system is as long as your attitude and principles are okay.

"Lyndon's come into the group and has settled in very well. He knows how to play the game and he'll go out there and do his best."

  9. Dykes' journey to Scotland's number ninepublished at 19:16 British Summer Time 4 September 2020

    Scotland v Israel (19:45)

It's been quite the journey for Lyndon Dykes.

Less than five years ago he was working in a kit-making factory sticking numbers on the back of jerseys on the Gold Coast.

After being convinced to take football more seriously he moved to Scotland to stay with relatives in Dumfries, and got a contract with Queen of the South.

From there he's made a name for himself at Livingston, which earned him a move to QPR just a few weeks ago. Now he'll lead the line for his parents' place of birth. On yoursel' son.

  11. Israel: Familiar friendspublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 4 September 2020

    Scotland v Israel (19:45)

It seems as though Scotland and Israel will be playing football against one another until the end of time.

Having played them home and away in the last Nations League campaign (with one win apiece), this is the first of three meetings over the next three months.

In October, it's the play-off, then in November the reverse fixture in the Nations League.

They also have a core of Scottish-based players in their squad to add to the familiarity. Ofir Marciano of Hibernian, and Celtic pair Nir Bitton and Hatem Abd Elhamed all start at Hampden.

If you think tonight's game is meaningless, think again. There's a chance winning this group could get Scotland into the play-offs for the 2022 World Cup.

I think when you play as a full-back, moving into centre-back is totally different if you're playing in a two. Playing in a three is much easier.

    Scotland v Israel (19:45)

I don't think I'm the only one scratching my head trying to work out what shape Scotland are going to line up in.

Will Ryan Jack play right-back to make a back four? Or is it a back three? Scott McTominay is wearing the number two shirt tonight, which could mean he's playing at centre-back, presumably alongside Scott McKenna and Kieran Tierney.

Your guess is as good as mine...
