  2. 'A proper game of football with fans, tackles and chances'published at 22:33 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2020

    FT: Everton 0-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer speaking to Sky Sports: "You never know what will happen in football, the first goal always changes games. As long as we were in the game I knew my substitutes could come on and make an impact, Luke [Shaw] has strength and power down the side so we tried to swap the dynamics of the game.

"Very good start the first 20-25 minutes we were excellent and should've been two or three goals up. They made a few good saves and then had a good spell just before half time but last 20 minutes or so we played well.

"It was cagey at times - there and back and flowing, attacking and defending but you're always confident if it opens up a bit with the pace we have.

"[Edinson] Cavani should've scored three in the first half but he is a top striker, movement, quality and the goal was excellent."

On potential Edinson Cavani red card incident: "Nothing in it, two South Americans that have had a few battles before, they met in Copa America qualifiers so no this was a proper game of football. With fans, tackles, yellow cards and chances at both ends, I enjoyed it."

Chances of winning competition: "We know that when we defend well we have players to win us the game, spirit in camp is good, winning gives energy and gives you a boost so we head into Boxing Day positive.

"A semi-final is sometimes worse than the final because it's the worst possible time to lose a game and go out of the competition."

  7. 'We did enough to win'published at 22:24 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2020

    FT: Everton 0-2 Man Utd

    Everton

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti speaking to Sky Sports: "We did enough to win - good performance we needed to defend which we did well but more in the second half. We had a difficult start but after 20 minutes the game was under control - we didn't play enough attacking football but we had to defend and until the last 20 minutes we did that well.

"They had more control, better quality so the game was to defend well which we did we had some opportunities on the counter-attack but that was the game that we planned.

"We left the position in midfield open too much and after that [Edinson] Cavani's quality showed and scored a fantastic goal."

On potential Cavani red card: "I don't know I didn't see the situation with Yerry Mina."

On Richarlison injury: "Knock on his head, he's fine now fortunately but we will see in the next few days. The doctor made the decision to take him off."

On being out of the cup: "If you have regrets we are more disappointed, we don't ned to have regrets because the team preformed well, sacrificed, worked hard and yes we lost but we look forward to the next game."

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire on Sky Sports: "It was an excellent performance and we should have been out of sight, we had three or four great chances. We need to be more clinical.

"Edinson Cavani's finish was excellent on his weak foot too. He's had an injury but it's good to have hime back, he's been a top striker throughout his career.

"We are expected to win trophies. It's important to reach these big games but we have to start winning them and lift some trophies for this club.

"We controlled the game and fully deserved the win."

  20. 'It was a big call to keep Cavani on the pitch'published at 22:00 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2020

    FT: Everton 0-2 Man Utd

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea and Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was a big call to keep Edinson Cavani on the pitch because he didn't manage to score in the first half but he didn't stop working and then he was up front when Marcus Rashford came on and he scored a magnificent goal.

Looking at the Man United bench at half time they did have the talent there. Everton did look a bit jaded with the games that they've had and that was the difference in the end.
