    Real Madrid 1-0 Borussia Monchengladbach

Real have controlled most of the opening 30 minutes at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium but Alassane Plea missed a huge chance to level for Gladbach on the counter as he clipped a shot over Thibaut Courtois but wide.

  2. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 30 mins

    Man City 0-0 Marseille

No need for VAR here as Dimitri Payet is a continent's width offside as he puts the ball in the net.

It's a shame because the finish with the outside of his boot was sublime.

Samuel Park: Not that i don't like Zidane, i hope RM goes down to EL cause they don't deserve to be in the CL. It will help them realise how bad they have become in the recent months. Poor. Should rename their club name to fake Madrid.

  4. 'Marseille aren't getting high enough up the field'published at 20:29 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2020

    Man City 0-0 Marseille

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Tottenham and England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Teams get behind and park the bus with Man City, and if you do it right you can hit them on the break. But Marseille can't because the first person up the field is Dimitri Payet and no direspect to him but he hasn't got the legs to get beyond the back four. If you're going to play someone up front you want a strong runner who's got a change of pace who can catch City out.

It's got to be perfect football for Marseille to get by City and they're not getting high enough up the field to do that. Marseille can't offer anything going forward at the minute.

The ball hasn't gone out of play hence John Stones hasn't come on yet...!!

There appears to be a problem with Eric Garcia, who is on the deck.

He gingerly walks off the pitch.

It looks like John Stones is coming on.

    Man City 0-0 Marseille

So Marseille are trying to play their game by playing cute football out of defence but it just keeps coming back into their area.

City are not giving this side any space.

Phil Foden has his first effort on goal - a 20-yard effort that is screwed wide.

  9. Stat attackpublished at 20 mins

Zack Steffen is the third American goalkeeper to start a Champions League game after Tim Howard (Manchester United) and Ethan Horvath (Club Brugge).

Earlier, I said it was dry in Manchester, in fact we do have some rain falling.

  11. 'City at this tempo are difficult to play against'published at 20:17 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2020

    Man City 0-0 Marseille

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Tottenham and England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's a matter of time now this - City on form, the tempo is brilliant the movement is nice and early on the ball. Sometimes City play too slow which helps the opposition but tonight they're really on it, when they're at this tempo they're very difficult to play against.

    Man City 0-0 Marseille

Marseille, fourth in Ligue 1, do look a threat on the wings as well.

Dimitri Payet, who we know has a decent delivery in him, whips in a ball from the right that appears to hit the head of the late-arriving team-mate Valere Germain. Had the winger got his bearings right then you never know.

Hoping Foden shows Pep why he should start against Man Utd on Saturday.. City always have more energy when he plays.

    Man City 0-0 Marseille

Aymeric Laporte sends his header over from Ilkay Gundogan's free-kick. The defender was put under a lot of pressure from Alvaro Gonzalez - good defending.

The home side, who beat the Ligue 1 outfit 3-0 in their first encounter, are very much bossing this match early doors.

Coach Andre Villas-Boas might need his players to get tight on the likes of Mahrez, Bernardo and Foden because they are running rings.

  15. 'Man City are dominating so far'published at 20:11 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2020

    Man City 0-0 Marseille

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Tottenham and England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Already in this game, I'm not sure the three mid-field players for Marseille have even touched the ball yet. Marseille just can't get the ball off Man City - City are just dominating.

  16. goal

GOAL - Real Madrid 1-0 Borussia Monchengladbachpublished at 20:10 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2020

    Karim Benzema (9 mins)

Real Madrid take the lead and look in control of quaifying now. Lucas Vazquez lofts in a cross which Karim Benzema heads into the corner of the net.

  17. Mahrez goes closepublished at 8 mins

    Man City 0-0 Marseille

Kyle Walker appears to have double vision as he sends his header towards an imaginary goal from Bernardo Silva's wicked cross from the left.

The offside flag went up, but was he really?

Moments later, Riyad Mahrez forces a great save from Steve Mandanda, who sticks his boot out in the nick of time.

The City man might have been offside, tbf.

    Man City 0-0 Marseille

At the other end Florian Thauvin, a firm... er... favourite with Newcastle fans, also delivers a fizzy ball into the City area, but it's plucked out of the air by Zack Steffen.

Steffen is making his first start in the competition for City, so a big "well done" him.

  19. Neymar overtakes Agueropublished at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2020

    Man City 0-0 Marseille

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the Etihad Stadium

Neymar's hat-trick for PSG has taken him one clear of Sergio Aguero and into second place in the list of South American Champions League goalscorers.

The Brazilian now has 41, one more than Aguero, who is on the bench tonight.

It probably doesn't need to be said that Lionel Messi is on top of the list. He has 118.

  20. Postpublished at 3 mins

    Man City 0-0 Marseille

Phil Foden delivers a beauty of a cross with Bernardo Silva in the area.

The ball is headed away by a Marseille defender and hits the hand of Bernardo before ref Halil Umut Meler blows his whistle, seemingly for handball.

Bit harsh on the Portuguese midfielder!
