The one downside to that win for Chelsea is that Jorginho and Mason Mount are suspended for the second leg.

  4. 'We never let them breathe'published at 22:29 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2021

    Atletico Madrid 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel to BT Sport: "Fantastic result, fantastic goal. Well deserved.

"We wanted to dominate in the opponents' half, to never lose concentration, not to do any easy mistakes and always be aware of quick counter-attacks for all their quality.

"It was a very disciplined performance - a deserved shut-out. This is the hard work, a team effort - the basis for a big win.

"We knew it [Atletico packing their defence] could happen. We told the guys if it happens maybe it's our quality and the respect. We wanted to be brave and play in their half.

"We knew they were ready to suffer with eight people in the box. The intention was to keep the intensity high. This is what we did very good. We never let them breathe or come out for counter-attacks. We have a big reward with this result.

"This is one of the toughest challenges to open a defence like Atletico."

  6. 'A deserved win'published at 22:18 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2021

    Atletico Madrid 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud told BT Sport: "We came here with strong intentions to win the game, play our game and we know how we could give them trouble offensively. We have been strong at the back in the defensive shape and very pleased with the win, it was a deserved win tonight.

"We know the importance of the away goal in European cups so that is why I was pleased to help the team win the game, we managed it well and we were confident but faced a great team and I think we were very committed and knew their main strengths. We dealt with it but we have to stay focussed and complete the job.

"Not over confident, we were confident in our qualities in the game. I did not know what to think about the goal, I just focussed on hitting the overhead kick and was pleased to see it go in the back of the net, I had no clue about being offside, Mason Mount said he did not touch the ball. Good for the team, good for me."

John Arundell: Chelsea's first real test and they passed, great team effort.

Uncle Busby: Proof of the decline of La Liga if these are top. Poor display from an horrifically average Atletico team, not even a shadow of the side they once were.

This Atleti are by far the dullest side I've seen this season! They'd rather get nil than score!!!

  15. 'Chelsea did a good job on Atletico'published at 21:58 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2021

    FT: Atletico Madrid 0-1 Chelsea

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's a great result for Chelsea. Atletico Madrid don't give much away, they know how to defend and they know how to progress in Champions League ties and Chelsea did a really good job on them tonight.

Yes Atletico had injury problems but I expected to see a lot more from them moving forward - but Chelsea nullified them in every sense and then took that great opportunity through Olivier Giroud.

Olivier Giroud is only the third player in 14 games to score an away goal against Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid in a Champions League knockout match. Kaka (2014) and Isco (2017) were the others.

Admittedly this was a home game in name only for Atletico.

Olivier Giroud, 34, is the oldest player to score for an English side in the knockout stages of the Champions League since Ryan Giggs, 37, in April 2011 for Manchester United against Schalke.
