In terms of drama and games on a knife-edge, this hasn't been a classic Champions League night.

City's bench tonight would probably finish in the top half of the Premier League?

Watching City at the moment is like watching the ultimate supercar, with all the parts working in perfect harmony and Pep is the chief mechanic.

GOAL - Real Madrid 2-0 Atalanta (agg 3-0)published at 21:16 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2021

    Sergio Ramos (pen, 59 mins)

Atalanta keeper Marco Sportiello gets a hand to Sergio Ramos' penalty but it still finds the bottom corner.

The game is up for the visitors now, surely.

  4. PENALTY - to Real Madridpublished at 21:15 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2021

Real Madrid 1-0 Atalanta (agg 2-0)

Another superb run from Vinicius Junior draws a trip from Rafael Toloi right on the edge of the box.

It's on the white line, so it's in the area.

It's a pretty blatant foul and Toloi is lucky to only receive a yellow card for upending his compatriot.

Maybe it might be a good idea to being Benjamin Mendy on, give him some time for City, as he will be needed at some stage as the season develops.

  6. YELLOW CARDpublished at 21:12 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2021

Man City 2-0 Borussia Monchengladbach (agg 4-0)

First booking goes to City defender Joao Cancelo for catching a Gladbach player.

City have had 77.8% of the ball in this half. Riyad Mahrez has a cross cleared. They're still dominant.

    Oh, Vinicius Junior.

He's done all the hard work, picking up the ball deep in his own half, exchanging passes, jinking his way between three defenders into the box with some fabulous footwork.

But with only Marco Sportiello to beat, he pokes wide. What a goal that would have been for the Madrid man.

It's a very weak argument really to hold the fact Gladbach aren't very good against City.

City are clearly in the top two teams in Europe this season (along with Bayern Munich).

Paris St-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Porto, Liverpool and Real Madrid (if they beat Atalanta) are the other sides in the quarter-finals.

Bayern Munich will probably join them tomorrow - and one of Chelsea or Atletico Madrid.

Apart from Bayern, who there might be better than City?

Abdul: People seem to forget we've had Barcelona, PSG, Real Madrid in the knockout stages, both Madrid and Barca in their prime years in knockout games. I don't get the City criticism for not playing an elite team, instead of praise for a well deserved win in the round of 16 game.

Arsenal fan here... City have been my favourite team to watch for the last 10 years. No bitterness... They just remind me of Arsenal at their best. Hoping to catch up with them over the next few years..

Ilkay Gundogan picks out Riyad Mahrez, who doesn't get enough backlift from the edge of the box and shoots wide of the goal.

City are making this look like an FA Cup third round game.

City getting flack for maybe being *only* the second best team in Europe, makes me laugh. People are so desperate to find any criticism at all.

Gladbach are on the verge of losing seven successive matches for the first time since 1989.

They have imploded really since boss Marco Rose announced he was going to Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season.

I really expected City after the first goal to slow down, kill the game, pass it to death... but no! They kept on closing down, kept on pressing incredibly high. They kept on going after the second goal, kept that high tempo and being inventive.

A number of people in the past have said they find Manchester City dull but not tonight - this is a joy to watch. A top team playing at their very best.
