Now Gladbach go close. Breel Embolo lashes one in from 20 yards. It takes one or two deflections and a diving Ederson tips it round the post.

Man City 0-0 Borussia Monchengladbach (agg 2-0)

Big chance for City as Phil Foden stretches to reach a Joao Cancelo ball but it's at Yann Sommer.

Man City 0-0 Borussia Monchengladbach (agg 2-0)

Bernardo Silva is playing as City's false nine in the early stages.

He is the fourth Portuguese player to make 50 Champions League appearances without playing in the competition for a Portuguese club. Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Tiago are the others.

  5. Postpublished at 20:04 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2021

Man City 0-0 Borussia Monchengladbach (agg 2-0)

City are dominating possession so far - almost 100% in the opening three minutes - but haven't been near the opposition box.

  6. Postpublished at 20:04 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2021

Real Madrid 0-0 Atalanta (agg 1-0)

HUGE early chance for Atalanta to level the tie on aggregate.

Muriel's pull-back finds Robin Gosens around six yards out - he's slightly on the stretch but should do better than poke weakly straight at Thibaut Courtois.

Early warning for Real that this is far from over.

    Pat Nevin
Former Everton and Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

The high press is incredibly high from Borussia Monchengladbach. It looks like they are going to have a little bit of a dig at it, little bit of a go at it, right from the start here - so that's good to see.

Under way in Madrid too for Real v Atalanta.

  9. 'City have a solid base now'published at 20:01 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2021

    Paul Dickov
Former Manchester City striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

The Manchester City defence has been outstanding and obviously Ruben Dias is the man everyone is talking about, the difference that he has made - plus the form of John Stones coming back when it looked like he would be leaving the club.

There is a back three there now that has a consistency about it. Also Rodri in front of them, has to take a lot of credit. People weren't too sure of him last season but City really have a solid base to go on now.

This will be the eighth European club game at the Puskas Arena this season.

It had hosted the Uefa Super Cup, two Ferencvaros home games in the Champions League, both legs of Liverpool-RB Leipzig and this tie - and a Spurs Europa League game.

It is one of the Euro 2020 host cities too.

And it's been lit up sky blue in honour of the 'home' team tonight...

  14. City's watertight defencepublished at 19:48 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2021

Man City v Borussia Monchengladbach (20:00 GMT, 2-0 first leg)

Manchester City have only conceded one goal in their seven Champions League games this season, to go 1-0 down to Porto in the first game.

They've scored 15 goals without reply since.

Since losing three consecutive home games in the competition between March and September 2018, City have won 10 of their last 11 Champions League outings at Etihad Stadium (drawn one) - averaging 3.5 goals per game in this run.

Real Madrid have progressed from all seven two-legged European knockout ties when they recorded a 1-0 away victory in the first leg.

Based on historic results in all European competitions, the first-leg score has given Real Madrid an 88% chance of progressing to the next round, say Gracenote.

  17. Gasperini says Atalanta will not change stylepublished at 19:38 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2021

Real Madrid v Atalanta (20:00 GMT, 1-0 first leg)

Atalanta will stick with their attacking philosophy, says coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

They have been Serie A's top scorers for the past two years and reached the Champions League quarter-finals last season.

"Since we started our style has been like this and it has cost us some heavy defeats, also some beatings in the Champions League,” Gasperini said.

"But we’ve never considered changing our way of playing and we’ve tried to grow through our ideas. We could park the bus and wait for our chance, but that’s not our philosophy."

Real Madrid v Atalanta (20:00 GMT, 1-0 first leg)

A strange story involving Real Madrid and forward Rodrygo earlier today.

Real tweeted that Rodrygo was injured and linked to a story with today's date that was written in December when the Brazilian youngster was actually injured.

He recently returned from a thigh problem and the club have confirmed he is fully fit available tonight.

Spanish media reports say the club's website and Twitter account were hacked.

Richard Browne: With City's squad advantage, if they're going to win it all, this year would be the year to do it.

The away goals rule has needed scrapping for sometime but the situation with it this season is absolutely farcical. It simply has to be scrapped for the quarter finals and semis or we're going to have some ludicrous and unfair outcomes.
