Chelsea 0-0 Atletico Madrid (agg 1-0)

Chelsea work it nicely around the Atletico box - quick and crisp - but the away side are a tough nut to crack. They keep their shape and are able to capitalise when Hakim Ziyech's little pass in the box goes astray.

The best form of defence is attack and that's what Chelsea need to do at times - keep scaring them and keep Kieran Trippier pushing back because he doesn't want to get too high because he'll be conscious of the space he vacates.

Chelsea 0-0 Atletico Madrid (agg 1-0)

Kai Havertz's pass inside the full-back find Alonso for a soft shot past the post. It wouldn't have counted, though, with the flag up against the charging wing-back.

    Bayern 0-0 Lazio (agg, 4-1)

    But here's a chance!

Leroy Sane cuts inside off the right and whips it towards the far corner. It flies inches wide. Pepe Reina was scrambling...

    Bayern 0-0 Lazio (agg, 4-1)

No real chances of note yet in Munich but Lazio are seeing more of the ball in these last few minutes.

Manuel Lazzari has put one or two crosses in which have been dealt with comfortably, while Joaquin Correa struck tamely wide.

  6. Postpublished at 20:12 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

Chelsea 0-0 Atletico Madrid (agg 1-0)

Kante's determination sees him drive forward with the ball and evade two challenges but he can't find the space for a shot. It came from a poor pass from Atletico that left them almost wide open. A sign that the Spanish side will have to take chances.

  7. Postpublished at 20:10 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

Chelsea 0-0 Atletico Madrid (agg 1-0)

Some heavy Atletico pressing going on in these early stages. It is happening high up the pitch, putting a lot of pressure on the Blues defence to be sharp with their thinking and passing.

  8. Postpublished at 20:09 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

Chelsea 0-0 Atletico Madrid (agg 1-0)

Chelsea win the game's first corner.

With the assistant official adopting a bizarre crouching stance next to him, Reece James swings it in for an Atletico head to meet and clear away.

That is why Timo Werner is playing the number nine role tonight - when Atletico go for it and push Chelsea back to that back five Werner is blistering past the two centre-backs of Atletico on the counter. He is there tonight purely to counter-attack and push those two centre-backs into an uncomfortable position.

  10. Postpublished at 20:07 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

Chelsea 0-0 Atletico Madrid (agg 1-0)

Nice work. Yannick Carrasco's flick on the edge of the box is into Renan Lodi's path and his looping shot is plucked out of the air by Edouard Mendy.

  11. Postpublished at 20:06 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

    Bayern 0-0 Lazio (agg, 4-1)

Robert Lewandowski is already causing a nuisance for Bayern. He wins a header at the back post and nods it into the centre where Serge Gnabry isn't too far away from getting on the end of it before it's cleared.

  12. Postpublished at 20:05 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

Chelsea 0-0 Atletico Madrid (agg 1-0)

First shooting chance falls to Marcos Llorente, but he is tackled on the edge of the box as he puts his boot through the ball.

Soon after, down the other end, Timo Werner just fails to keep the ball in as he looks to get a cross over.

I'm really excited for this game - I think this is going to be a really interesting game. I can't wait to see how both teams line up because we know how good both managers are tactically, so I'm really looking forward to this one.

Here come the teams at Stamford Bridge. Just enough time for you to grab a drink of something and settle in while they belt that Champions League anthem out.

I don't see Chelsea winning this competition but what gives them hope is the goals conceded since Thomas Tuchel came to the club.

They are always going to be in games. I think Atletico could take this to extra-time and could potentially go through but I think we are in for a tight game.

Is Tuchel expecting a tough time for his keepers tonight? Two on the bench, but no centre backs?!

  18. One extreme to the other...published at 19:56 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

Chelsea v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT)

Olivier Giroud may well feel a bit put out by being on the bench for this game after his overhead kick winner in the first leg.

The Chelsea striker is averaging a goal every 38 minutes in the Champions League this season, the best ratio in a season of any player to play at least 200 minutes. It is the best in a European Cup season since Ton Blanker in 1979-80, who netted one goal every 34 minutes for Ajax.

Should he score in the second leg, he will be the oldest player to score in both legs of a Champions League knockout tie (34 years, 168 days). The current oldest is Zlatan Ibrahimovic v Chelsea in 2015-16 for Paris St-Germain in the last 16 (34 years, 158 days).

In contrast, Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suárez has failed to score in all five of his Champions League appearances for the club this season and has not scored in any of his last 24 away appearances in the competition, since September 2015 with Barcelona at Roma.

I appreciate that just by putting this on here, I've probably ensured a Suarez goal tonight. Apologies in advance to Chelsea fans.

  19. 'Llorente will be one of the main threats'published at 19:55 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

Chelsea v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Spanish football expert Pete Jenson on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Atletico have the capabilities to take the game to Chelsea if Diego Simeone lets them and a lot more than they did in the first leg.

"It's most definitely a 4-4-2 and the system that Simeone has preferred in previous seasons and in Marcos Llorente they have a tremendous talent. He will be one of the main threats."

To add to the 'what are the odds?' chat for tonight...

    • Chelsea have never been eliminated in a European two-legged knockout tie after winning the first leg away from home (progressed from all 13).
    • Atletico Madrid have a 50% progression rate in the European Cup/Champions League after losing the first leg of knockout ties, progressing from four of eight previous ties.
    • Thomas Tuchel has only lost three of the 16 home games he has overseen as a manager in the Champions League (won 11, drew two).
    • Atletico Madrid have won just two of their past 10 away Champions League knockout matches (drawn two, lost six).
