  1. Can Chelsea boss find goals after restoring Blues harmony?published at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

Chelsea v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT)

Thomas Tuchel has restored confidence and equanimity to a Chelsea squad which became fractured under Frank Lampard - and he has done so by giving everyone a chance.

The German has made 39 changes to his starting line-up in the 10 Premier League games since he took over in January, with senior internationals brought in from the cold to battle it out with the club's academy graduates and the products of last summer's £220m outlay.

It has led to a cautious transition, with 12 games unbeaten in all competitions and only two goals conceded.

But as the team approaches the business end of the season, starting with the second leg of their last-16 Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, could it be time for the former Paris St-Germain boss to narrow in on his best team in the search for more goals?

Spanish football expert Pete Jenson on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Joao Felix is still very young. A lot of people have drawn the conclusion that he joined the wrong club and the wrong manager.

"But Diego Simeone did take Antoine Griezmann a few years back, who is a similar sort of player and he became the player that Barcelona then signed.

"He is the most expensive player in Atletico's history and I think the third most expensive of all time but at the moment we are not really seeing a £100m player.

"They have to make it work because of the deflation in the market, he is a talent but hasn't shown anything to suggest he is worth that money."

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to BT Sport: "If we start thinking too much about the result we stop thinking about the process. You cannot just think, you have to do.

"We have Oli (Giroud) from the bench, five more from the bench. We have Timo (Werner) up front with a lot of speed and hopefully he can create trouble.

"Andreas (Christiansen) is unfortunately ill overnight. No Corona, he had a negative test.

"They have three big players back which gives the opportunity to attack a bit more with Llorente on the half position. We do not think about the first leg. We play again. You need two top-level games to go through."

Chelsea have a 63% chance of finishing the job and reaching the last eight, according to the Euro Club Index.

Chelsea's chance of winning the Champions League is now as high as it has ever been.

The Euro Club Index gives Chelsea a 4% chance of lifting the Champions League trophy later this year. Chelsea's chance was also 4% after they had sealed qualification before the final group phase match.

  6. Progress requiredpublished at 19:42 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

Chelsea v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT)

This is a really big night for the Blues. They've been somewhat out of the major European picture for a few seasons now, having not made it past the last-16 stage since 2013-14.

If you'd informed someone at the club that would be the case as they were celebrating winning the whole thing in 2012, they'd have probably guffawed in your face.

When you spend like the Blues did last summer, it is not just domestic progress you expect. They are starting to get back on track in the Premier League. Time to show they can mix it with the really big boys again.

Bayern Munich always have a plan. They are a machine that keeps churning out victories and titles. They have an extremely strong side and if anyone leaves they have replacements coming in.

There is no way Lazio will go through tonight.

Lazio really let me down three weeks ago. They were awful and are just playing for pride tonight.

Bayern had a little blip but that amounted to a draw and a narrow defeat, Since then they have won four games on the trot and have picked a really strong side tonight.

Bayern Munich's starting XI have scored a combined 161 goals in the Champions League.

That's 156 goals more than Lazio's starting players (five), who would need to score at least four goals in Munich to progress to the next round.

    All the best!

Atletico have lost three Champions League matches against the Blues, their joint-most against an opponent along with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

The first was a group-stage game in 2009, which Chelsea won 4-0 thanks to goals from Salomon Kalou (2), Frank Lampard (remember him?) and an own goal from Luis Amaranto Perea.

The Blues also won in the group stage in 2017 - 2-1 - thanks to Alvaro Morata and Michy Batshuayi (in the 93rd minute).

However, Atletico will point to a notable European double against Chelsea. In the 2012 Uefa Super Cup they won 4-1, with Radamel Falcao getting a hat-trick, and two years later beat Chelsea in the last four, winning 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Any coach in Europe would be envious of this Chelsea squad. It is incredible. I saw reports today that Chelsea might be looking to swap Timo Werner with Erling Braut Haaland. If that rumour were true that would be some signing.

Christian Pulisic's form was tremendous at the start of the season but it would not surprise me if Chelsea had a bit of a turnaround with their squad.

Chelsea v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT)

Atletico eliminated Liverpool at this stage of the competition last season (you'll definitely remember it - the last game before we all shut up shop). Tuchel is expecting another tough game, after the first leg was played in Romania because of coronavirus restrictions.

"Atletico is one of the teams to give away the fewest chances in the whole of Europe so it's very important to be patient and keep this level going," said the German.

"We have a big respect for them because we are playing against the leaders in Spain and we did an outstanding job in Bucharest.

"We need to be focused, play a high-intensity match and play with hunger, aggression and a high level."

"Chelsea don't have a weakness. The only thing is they don't know what can happen from a negative point of view - they have not had a negative result yet," said boss Diego Simeone.

"We don't know how they will approach it, but I know what we want, which is to win."

Sounds like Diego would love to score first and see how that goes down in the Blue corner. To be fair, it would make for a fascinating and potentially gripping tie for us neutrals if they do.

Six of the goals Chelsea have scored under Thomas Tuchel have come from the two suspended players.

They are struggling to get goals because they are concentrating on possession and trying to get players behind the ball. Sometimes when you concentrate on one area of the pitch you lose something from elsewhere.

But Tuchel has gone for a clean-sheet mentality and it is working.

  15. Tuchel yet to losepublished at 19:23 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

Chelsea v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT)

Chelsea remain unbeaten under Thomas Tuchel's management. Twelve games and counting.

They were held last time out, drawing 0-0 at Leeds, but that is hardly a black mark on Tuchel's largely spotless start.

One thing that has been very noticeable is how much more solid they are as a side. They dominate the ball and don't often concede. There have been a few murmurings about a decline in attacking output, but that is surely something that will come. I mean, look at the forward and midfield players they have in the squad!

I'm a little surprised by Thomas Tuchel's line-up. He has got three players at the top of the pitch that are searching for their fitness.

It's a gamble and he has Olivier Giroud on the bench and Callum Hudson-Odoi who has been playing well.

If you go into a game against Atletico and you are not fully fit it is a huge gamble.

You may remember that in the first leg between Bayern and Lazio, Jamal Musiala became the German side's youngest-ever goalscorer (17 years, 363 days) in the Champions League, breaking Samuel Kuffour's record from 1994 (18 years, 60 days). The only teenager to score in consecutive appearances in the competition for the club is Kingsley Coman in March 2016, when he was 19.

Of a slightly more mature vintage, Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski has been directly involved in 33 goals in 31 home games for the club in the Champions League (28 goals and five assists). Indeed, the German side have won all 21 of their home games in the competition when Lewandowski has been on the scoresheet.

  19. Focus on next yearpublished at 19:13 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

Bayern Munich v Lazio (20:00 GMT)

It says a lot that Lazio manager Simone Inzaghi is already focused on qualifying for next season's competition after admitting their first-leg collapse - falling 4-0 behind inside 47 minutes - has made further progress unlikely this term.

No side in the history of the competition - in its current guise as the Champions League or its predecessor the European Cup - has ever progressed from a knockout tie after losing the first leg by three or more goals at home.

Before this season, Lazio had not qualified for the Champions League since 2007-08 and Inzaghi is keen to avoid it being a one-off although they sit seventh in Serie A, six points behind fourth-placed Atalanta.

"We hadn't entered the Champions League for more than 10 years, we missed the second round [last 16] for 20 years. We have to hit it more consistently," said Inzaghi.

"We have to fully enjoy an evening like Wednesday night. Unfortunately, with the first leg we have compromised passage to the next round."
