City will have to score tonight to qualify, as they are likely to concede at least one. Thought Jesus would be a better option up top since he's been in decent form recently. Benardo Silva not exactly banging goals in recently.

Liverpool v Real Madrid (20:00 BST)

Liverpool have progressed twice in 13 previous knockout ties in Europe where they have lost the first leg by two or more goals.

The most recent was overturning a 3-0 first-leg deficit against Barcelona en route to winning the 2018-19 Champions League.

Real Madrid have won 15 of their 16 previous Champions League knockout ties when winning the first leg by two or more goals. The exception was the 2003-04 quarter-final against Monaco (4-2 first leg, 1-3 second leg).

Another player who Manchester City fans will be intrigued to see at close quarters again is Erling Braut Haaland.

So too will Manchester United fans, Real Madrid fans, Barcelona fans...

Those are just four of the clubs linked with big-money moves for the 20-year-old Norwegian, who has ripped up Bundesliga and European defences alike with his pace, power and predatory ability.

And here's another warning for City's defence: Haaland has only failed to score in three of his 15 appearances in the Champions League and has scored seven in his four home games in the competition.

  9. 'We have to create our own atmosphere'published at 19:42 British Summer Time 14 April 2021

Liverpool v Real Madrid (20:00 BST)

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says they need to create their own atmosphere tonight.

Their famous comeback against Barcelona in 2019 was achieved in front of a full Anfield - but tonight the ground will be empty.

"We cannot just take comebacks for granted, especially not without a crowd in the stadium. We have to create our own atmosphere for this game," Klopp said.

"What we will not lose sight of is how good we are. The talent we have. The magic in our dressing room and the character required to make special moments happen. We have the entire package at Liverpool. "

Nobody likes a good night's sleep being disturbed - especially before a big day ahead at work.

But City's players had their shut-eye interrupted last night after a series of fireworks were let off outside their Dortmund hotel in the early hours.

On two occasions during the night explosions woke players and staff before a third attempt was prevented by the Blues' own security staff.

The fireworks were described as "industrial strength" in a Daily Mail story, external about the incident, with a 'gang of 17' said to be responsible for the disruption.

Let's hope there will be fireworks - in a metaphorical sense - on the pitch tonight...

Borussia Dortmund v Manchester City (20:00 BST)

Dortmund fans might not be on the Yellow Wall tonight, but they are still having their say...

Think the message is clear: they don't want a planned new Champions League format - with a 'Swiss-style' 10-match first phase - to go ahead.

Here are the proposals, which would come in from 2024.

This will be Real Madrid's third visit to Anfield to face Liverpool in European competition - they lost 4-0 in March 2009 and won 3-0 in October 2014 (both in the Champions League).

After winning their first three meetings with Real in European competition, Liverpool have lost each of their last four against them.

  15. 'Barca wouldn't have been possible without fans'published at 19:35 British Summer Time 14 April 2021

Liverpool v Real Madrid (20:00 BST)

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson admits they would not have completed 2019's comeback against Barcelona in an empty stadium.

The Reds beat Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield last season to progress, after losing 3-0 in Spain. But they will have no fans shouting them on tonight as they look to overturn a 3-1 first-leg defeat at Real Madrid.

"Barcelona that night was obviously an incredible night and wouldn't have been possible without fans in there," he said.

"The fans made us feel 10 feet tall and believe even more. We felt before that game we could overturn it.

"Walking out in front of 55,000 other people who believed gave that extra five or 10% which makes a huge difference. Unfortunately tomorrow [Wednesday] night we won't have that."

City fans have been deprived of the chance to see what they could have had in the shape of Jadon Sancho - although they are likely to see that as a positive thing bearing in mind the danger posed by the Dortmund winger.

Sancho missed the first leg with a muscle injury and has again been ruled out tonight with the problem.

The England international came through the City youth ranks and has blossomed into one of Europe's most exciting talents since making a £10m move to Germany in 2017.

"He is doing his best to return as fast as possible and we would like to have him with us but he won't be," said Dortmund interim coach Edin Terzic.

"We have to take our time with him, so he is not an option for, but we hope it won't last much longer for him before he comes back into the team."
