More from Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan after they reached the Champions League semi-finals for the first time under Pep Guardiola: "We know how tough this competition is. In every single game the opponents are so difficult, everyone has quality and this Dortmund team has quality and can beat anyone.

"It was about staying in the game, playing with attitude and personality especially at this stage of the competition. We proved we were ready to fight for the semi-finals."

On City's desire to win the Champions League this season: "No-one wants to let this competition go, I guess if you ask Dortmund players, they feel the same. Everyone wants to succeed in this competition, that's why it is harder, everyone wants to win and be successful.

"But if you have the right attitude with quality in the squad and with the right ideas then the chances of success are high."

What a performance by City. Foden has to be talked about in the same breath as Haaland and Mbappe - what a player!

I was keen to see Erling Braut Haaland on his own patch and being more comfortable, but John Stones and Ruben Dias didn't switch off.

He's reliable, he holds onto the ball and the defenders were never really comfortable, he was always in and around them.

  4. 'We were scared to lose something at first'published at 22:10 British Summer Time 14 April 2021

Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Manchester City (agg 2-4)

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, speaking to BT Sport, on reaching the Champions League semi-finals: "It means a lot to be honest, this club and this team deserve it. We are grateful for being in a great competition and reaching the semi-finals for the first time with this team. Obviously we are very happy about it.

"Today once again we showed character, we didn't play well at all in the first 15 minutes, we struggled and we weren't brave enough and were scared to lose something. That was obvious.

"After conceding the first goal we were able to get hold of possession and create chances. Our target was to score the first goal of the second half and get the game back into our hands. That's exactly what we did."

  5. 'We were obviously the better team'published at 22:08 British Summer Time 14 April 2021

FT: Liverpool 0-0 Real Madrid (agg 1-3)

Liverpool midfielder James Milner talking to BT Sport: "The performance, intensity and desire was good. But you can't not take the chances we had and that was the difference.

"The positive is we are creating the chances and the reaction we showed. We were obviously the better team. We did enough to win the game.

"We wanted to come out of the blocks and set that tempo. If we had played that first leg with the same intensity it would have been very different. Ultimately we weren't good enough over two games.

"The most important thing is if we perform with the desire and intensity hopefully we can get into those top four spots."

Liverpool's problem isn't just loss of their star defenders, it's when the strikers can't score the midfield doesn't have the capability either. City have De Bruyne & Gundogan, Liverpool have Milner and Wijnaldum. No contest.

Very good second half from City, a role reversal from the first.

They came out as a different side, more energy and more like the City I’d expected to see. They deserved it, there was good organisation and energy, very professional.

It was a penalty. I felt for him [Emre Can]. The ball did hit his head first but they gave it. The pressure was on Riyad Mahrez’s shoulders and he took it on – the penalty was despatched very well.

Their quality shone, and Foden was straight over to the manager head to head, as if to say ‘thank you boss for giving me this chance’.

Liverpool have to believe they can make top four in the Premier League.

The performance tonight was good, don't take anything away from them, they didn't come here and sit back, they took the game to Madrid and they deserved to score a couple of goals which they didn't. But in the league now they have the full focus on that and they have to get Champions League football.

Liverpool only actually had three shots on target in that game, although it felt like more.

They skied plenty of chances I suppose.
