  1. CLOSE!published at 89 mins

    Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea

Ahhh brilliant delivery. Toni Kroos runs up and pings it flat and deliberate, picks out Raphael Varane and his header skims wide. Took a nick too, that was close!

Up in the stands Sergio Ramos has his head in his hands. He may have had the ball in the net if he was fit.

Real now ending with a good steady spell of pressure. Don't let him shoot there! Toni Kroos hits one, a big deflection and it spins wide. Corner!

The substitutions have worked for Chelsea but not for Real Madrid at this moment. The game has gone a bit flat. It doesn't really look like either side want to go for it. Chelsea will 100% be happy with the scoreline and they would be favourites going into the second leg.

I've barely registered Eden Hazard having a touch of the ball so far since he came on for Real. Let's hope that he can get back to anywhere near his brilliant best.

Here he is as I say that, beating a man and floating in a cross which is cleared.

He just put in a cross and met it in the middle I think.

Richard H: Apart from Kante, no player in this Chelsea team could be considered the best in the world in their position ... but they just click. They can play 1 touch, counter attack, positional play. They defend like beasts. Definition of more than the sum of their parts

The second half hasn't lived up to the first half. The teams have just been cancelling each other out but I still believe there is still an opportunity.

Into the final 10 minutes then. It's one of those where you feel Chelsea would have taken a 1-1 draw away from home before the game, it's a good result, but they'll have nagging doubts that they could have taken a firm grip on this match.

Hakim Ziyech pings the free-kick on target but it's catching practice for Thibaut Courtois.

Real have gone to a back four and straight away there's a gap for Kai Havertz to spring into. He's checked on the edge of the area and this is a free-kick in a dangerous spot.

Might rename my band to 'Rostance and the mediocre pace-merchants.' Lovely.

Karim Benzema has a shot blocked from a corner. Any late goals to come?

The second half has been that pedestrian Toni Kroos has had time to practice his air piano playing.

Marcelo is up there with Rooney as one of the most overhyped players of the previous generation. All his achievements are dependent on others and he fails when things rely on him. Mediocre pace-merchant who has lost his one valuable quality.

Real Madrid look flat. I feel like they need to throw an extra body on and go for the win because from what I've seen this evening Chelsea will beat them at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea much improved, Hakim Ziyech is zippy and making a difference, he very nearly gets beyond the last man but Eder Militao makes the challenge. Chance-saving challenge too.

The rain has returned. Smashing down again as Hakim Ziyech threads a dangerous ball across the middle. Someone should have been in on that!
