Nick Rodely: I want to see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer holding the #EuropaLeague trophy aloft later tonight, ideally after being drenched in champagne and thrown into the air by his players. It should not be understated just how much we have improved under Ole's management.

Tom: Like this XI for @ManUtd shows attacking intent. Not the usual defensive set up.

It was interesting to see that Wayne Rooney is heading to Gdansk for tonight's game.

Rooney is arguably responsible for the most notable incident in four meetings between Villarreal and Manchester United.

It came in the first, in 2005, when he was sent off for sarcastically clapping referee Kim Milton Nielsen during a Champions League group game.

The game itself ended 0-0, as have the other three matches between the sides.

At least tonight if there are no goals, we will get a winner via a penalty shoot-out.

Bruno Fernandes has started incredibly well and made a huge difference to Manchester United, but these are the games now, if Eric Cantona was playing, he would definitely have a great game.

He would play well tonight, and everybody would know he was playing and he was the leader, and Fernandes has to get hold of the game tonight and do exactly that.

Villarreal manager Unai Emery has won the Europa League three times.

He led Sevilla to victory in the competition in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Emery could become the first manager to win the competition four times.

He also reached the 2019 final with Arsenal, who sacked him a few months later.

"There is no revenge with the English teams or people. I am proud to play in this final defending Villarreal's colours," he said.

Villarreal, who beat Arsenal 2-1 on aggregate in the semi-final, are unbeaten in European competition this season, winning 12 times and drawing twice.

They had lost their four previous European semi-finals prior to beating the Gunners to reach a first major final in any competition.

A club that was first promoted to La Liga in 1998, they hail from a town of 50,000 people.

Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres has been linked with a move to Manchester United.

"One day before the most important game of my life, I won't think about anything else than what's going to happen," said the 24-year-old Spain international, who was born in Villarreal.

"All my work and my team-mates' work has been good, and this shows it.

"I've got my contract with Villarreal, which is my town, so I'm very quiet about it, very calm."

Not a United fan but you gotta get behind any English side in Europe haven't you? Cavani is a different gravy out there at the moment.

Villarreal v Man Utd (20:00 BST)

The past nine Europa League finals have been won by either a Spanish or an English team.

Sevilla have won four, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid have won two each and Manchester United won the other.

You'd have to go back to 2001 (Alaves v Liverpool) for the last time a Spanish side lost a Uefa Cup/Europa League final to a foreign team.

Villarreal boss Unai Emery freely admits Manchester United are considered the big favourites today.

"We can’t hide ourselves, that is the reality," he said.

"A few months ago we said Manchester United were favourites for the competition. Now we are candidates for this title and play against the favourites. They have good players, history and experience. We have a very strong recent history to deserve these moments.

"We are very enthusiastic. We have answers for the team. Manchester United can be favourites, they are very good and can beat anyone if they play their best. But we have a chance."

When the team sheets came in we looked at each other and said 'who is going to be Manchester United's voice? Who is going to be their leader?' If things aren't going well for Manchester United, who is going to change it, and say 'I'll mark him, you mark him' and that type of thing.

I'm looking through the squad and I can't see any real vocal leaders, maybe just Scott McTominay. There are experienced players in there, but vocally I start to struggle.

Villarreal midfielder Manu Trigueros, 29, has spent his senior career so far with the club.

His first-team debut came in the Second Division in 2012-13, having spent the previous season in the same league with Villarreal's B team.

“It’s a very special game for us because of all that we’ve experienced in this club - for everything that this final means for our fans and because of the club’s history," he said.

"For a lot of us, it’s also the most important game of our professional careers. I’m sure that it will be a very special match for all of us.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been speaking to MUTV about the absence of skipper Harry Maguire from tonight's game.

"He's not ready," he said. "He's not trained.

"We have him on the bench because if there's an emergency of course he'll want to come on.

"He's a leader in the dressing room and a player everyone respects and we need around the place."

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw missed the 2017 Europa League final - where United beat Ajax - through injury.

“I was a bit unfortunate last time, I wasn't there,” he said.

“This season, especially now there's much more confidence and belief in the squad that we're improving as a team. This is the next step to go out and show that we're going in the right direction.

“A medal would mean a great deal. When you come to Manchester United you look to win trophies. We’ve missed out on a few trophies in the last few years and I know how disappointed the lads have been.

“I look around and everyone seems very relaxed, enjoying the moment being here in the final. We have not been in one for a while. I think most of the lads are just looking forward to getting out there."

Villarreal v Man Utd (20:00 BST)

    Marcus RashfordImage source, Reuters

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford to Uefa.com: “Over time, you’ve seen Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just grow and grow and grow.

"We’ve won a lot more games under him in a much shorter space of time than anybody could have imagined. He still has the winning mindset that he had when he was a player.

"He pushes us every day and every game to be better than the game before. He comes in and is honest with us; he says his opinion and we move on to the next game and get ready.

“It’s been a journey. It’s still the early stages of his, hopefully, long career at United. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, and I feel that we’ve all grown.

"That’s why this game's important for us. We’re so close to being a team that can compete and win trophies every single season and, maybe winning this title, this Europa League, can give us that little push that we need.”

  20. What are the European ramifications?published at 19:29 British Summer Time 26 May 2021

Villarreal v Man Utd (20:00 BST)

Villarreal finished seventh in La Liga this season, 19th points off the top four.

If they lose today, it's the Europa Conference League play-offs next season. If they win, it's the Champions League group stages.

United are already guaranteed a Champions League place - but winning today would put them among the top seeds and give them an easier group in theory.
