It had been looming that goal, and Rowe had almost scored a moment before when he latched onto Nahki Wells' cut back and was lopped down in the act of shooting by Dominic Iorfa.

Some appeals for a penalty but not a team-wide cricket-style 'Howzat!' effort.

City lead and for the past five minutes, it's a goal they've been edging towards.

Clipped ball into the box found Chris Martin unmarked, and he cushioned a beautiful header back across goal into space for Tommy Rowe to attack, sliding in to divert beyond Cameron Dawson.

Wednesday bossed the first half but City have improved after the break and now lead.

Much improved this half from City, more zip to their play, moving the ball more quickly and not allowing Wednesday to set about them.

Ball to the right moved infield to the onrushing Alfie Mawson, but the skipper's chip to the backpost from the left side of the field sails out ahead of Jamie Paterson.

  4. CLOSE!published at 55 mins

    Bristol City 0-0 Sheff Wed

City get a free-kick after Dominic Iorfa clips down Nakhi Wells chasing a ball played into the left channel.

Jamie Paterson and Tommy Rowe stand over it, Paterson fizzes in a really sizzling inswinger which Cameron Dawson beats away, but Tyreeq Bakinson can only swing his effort on the rebound over the bar.

    Chance...

Izzy Brown almost playing Josh Windass in, got there first to a bouncing 50-50 and nudged it forward but the Wednesday forward was crowded out.

City tried to hit Jamie Paterson with a diagonal into the right corner but it was too strong.

Here they come again, Nakhi Wells fires to the backpost, Andreas Weimann denied a shooting angle by the trajectory of the ball, so he arcs his run back round and sees his shot blocked on the edge of the box.

    More like it from City.

Owls midfielder/forward Izzy Brown went for a 50-50 with Alfie Mawson on the edge of the City box and lost the ball but the Bristol City defender is feeling the after effects.

Taylor Moore cut a decent Wednesday cross out shortly after, before play was halted to allow Mawson some treatment.

City look to knock it into the right channel, but Joost Van Aken smacks the ball well away into the stand.

Same player did well to cut out a sharp one-touch move from the home side seconds later.

Cross from the right soaked up by Wednesday, bright opening by Bristol City.

Full marks to the PA guy, who just welcomed the Bristol City players back onto the pitch with all the gusto of a man welcoming Metallica onto the stage at a packed Wembley. (Oh the very thought of a crowd...)

His announcement of the Wednesday team much more muted, understandably.

Entertaining fare, that if you were going off a boxing scorecard, you'd say Wednesday landed the cleaner punches, but without causing too much damage.

Bristol City got caught up in a spider's web of a midfield all too often, where the likes of Massimo Luongo and Barry Bannan kept breaking up play efficiently.

    Still, anyone's game isn't it?

    CHANCE FOR JOSH WINDASS!

Great ball in by Elias Kachunga from the right flank, teased into that no-mans land between keeper and attacker, but the sliding Wednesday forward could only divert the shot wide. Let off for City.

At the other end, a drive forward and laser-guided pass by Andreas Weimann found Chris Martin, and after he tried to tee up a team-mate, Dominic Iorfa came in with a dominant block tackle and sauntered away with the ball.

Des Walker-esque. Cool as you like.

Joost Van Aken down receiving treatment, as was Jamie Paterson, who is booked for his part in the coming together of the two players.

Bristol City can't get their dangermen, the likes of Jamie Paterson, Tyreeq Bakinson and Andreas Weimann, on the ball in the right areas.

Paterson showed some nice skill to get away from his marker a moment ago, but ended up being fouled in midfield.

Weimann found some space and carted it forward, then Tommy Rowe got a cross blocked, but from the throw, more harrassment from the Wednesday midfield ends up with the ball going back to Dan Bentley.

Story of the game so far.

Liam Palmer is hauled down by Tyreeq Bakinson on the edge of the box after sloppy play turned the ball to the visitors, and the City midfielder is booked.

Izzy Brown and Barry Bannan stand over the set-piece...

Brown gets his boot under the ball and hoists it too deep, curling away to safety at the back post.

Architects of their own downfall there, City. Need to be tidier.

Bristol City just cannot bypass the checkpoint-esque Wednesday three-man midfield unit and keep being turned away.

The Owls break on one such foiled attack, with Josh Windass jinking his way to the edge of the box but can only drag his shot wide of the target.

City have a chance, Nahki Wells curls in a cross but Wednesday get to it and to crank up the irritation, they concede a free-kick.

Wells gives Tony Harrington a piece of his mind, and is perhaps lucky to avoid further punishment.

Bristol City enjoy a spell of possession inside the Wednesday half but go nowhere with it, the coverage from the Owls defence was really tight.

Kadeem Harris races away after nicking possession and is chopped down by a cheeky Jamie Paterson clip. Free-kick.

Izzy Brown bends in the set-piece but Joost Van Aken can't get to it, and Tom Lees goes down holding his head. Nothing going from Tony Harrington, our ref.

First actual proper shot on goal.

Kadeem Harris cutting in for the Owls from the left side after taking on the full-back, and bending his right footed effort at the uprights.

Daniel Bentley saves, but it counts as a chance.
