  4. 'Calvert-Lewin's goals taking him to another level'published at 22:22 British Summer Time 8 October 2020

    England 3-0 Wales

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate speaking to ITV: "I thought the players did very well. It's so difficult for a new team to come together without much experience, it was not fluid at the start but we got more and more into the game, the players saw the tactical problems Wales posed to us when they were pressing and I thought we finished strongly."

On striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin: "Really good, he had excellent presence, his runs are a threat, he presses well and he took his goal well. I thought he could be really pleased. I think he is in a really good vein of form. He's an all-round centre forward. I've always liked his general play but it's the goals that are making him another level of player."

On midfielder Jack Grealish: "His work with the ball was very good. We know he draws those fouls, he's comfortable receiving the ball in tight areas and again it was a debut he could be really pleased with."

Wales Captain Ben Davies: "England were clinical. We started well but the goal was a real sucker punch. As soon as they got in good areas they created better chances than we did.

"We have to do some things a lot better. We need to improve, it was disappointing the way we conceded the goals.

"We had a young squad, we showed a lot of character early on and we didn't sit off them - I was proud of the boys the way we had a go tonight."

England striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin speaking to ITV: "Absolutely [a dream debut]. It's a shame there are no fans here to celebrate and my family aren't here, it's bittersweet in that sense but to score on my debut it's the stuff of dreams.

"I've worked very hard to get here, it's felt like a long road but I'm very pleased to be here and to get the opportunity to score on my debut."

On Jack Grealish: "He's a top player, I've seen it already. He has bags of ability and I knew that if he got in that position he would get the cross in [for my goal].

"I felt comfortable. The lads have welcomed me in and I felt comfortable from the moment I walked through the door. I went out and the main objective was to enjoy myself."

On potentially getting more minutes in England's upcoming fixtures: "I don't know what [going off early] suggests but I enjoyed the time I had on the pitch and I'm ready to step in when needed."

On ending the night with the captain's armband: "I can't explain it. To play with these players is incredible for me, the feeling of it and everything about playing at Wembley for England - I'll never forget it.

"You want to come and impress, everyone does, but I want to come and help whenever I'm called upon. I will make sure I'm ready and I'll give 110% every time I play for my country."

Gareth Southgate will be happy with a selection headache and he's given an opportunity to certain players who have stepped up and done really well. We know there are a lot of players who haven't played tonight who he is loyal to. He's got a big pool of players to pick from, but it's still very early on.

Everyone's been crying out to give Nick Pope, Jack Grealish and Dominic Calvert-Lewin opportunities and he has - so Southgate will be delighted to give those players those minutes and the performances were really good.

England looked really sharp. If there was any criticism it's that at the end they just took the wrong option once or twice but they looked so good going forward, and Wales looked tired. England completely dominated by the end.
