Manchester United had been doing a dance with Barcelona for a while but they made it very clear they were not going to let Ousmane Dembélé go out on loan.

Dembélé was the second-most expensive signing in Barcelona's history behind Philippe Coutinho, who was brought in for about 130 million euros.

They knew they were never going to get a full return on their investment but they wanted to get something for it. So Barca made it very clear to Manchester United that if they wanted him they would have to pay something.

A couple of days ago the sporting director came out and said officially that Dembélé was not for sale, but I do think that Manchester United did try to tempt them today with some sort of a bid, it just wasn't good enough.

I think when you bring a player in from the Championship to the Premier League they need to be young because the perception is they are going to be a development player.

So if you bring a Joe Rodon from Swansea to Tottenham, he's only 22 years old, so he can work his way into the squad, maybe play the European games, the cup games and get himself slowly into the mould and then eventually become a star.

If you're a Manchester United fan, you are not going to be excited by the smaller players, they want global superstars that they have been used to signing in the past. They have been spoiled by what they have signed before.

Ultimately, with the market the way it is, you're going to have to pay over the top for these Championship players, so you might as well go abroad and pay for someone who is a couple of years older but has played in the Champions League and around Europe and get them into the club instead.

  4. 'Cavani is one of the most prolific goalscorers in Europe'published at 22:36 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Semra Hunter
    La Liga tv presenter

I know there has been a lukewarm reaction given Edinson Cavani's age but he is someone who has proven himself at the elite level.

Yes, he is 33 years old, but he brings with him loads of trophies - I think 24 during his career with Napoli, Paris St-Germain and the Uruguayan national team.

He has scored 304 goals in the last 439 games just with Napoli and PSG, so when it comes to Europe he is one of the most prolific goalscorers out there.

Theo Walcott became the youngest first-team player ever to feature for Southampton when he made his debut in August 2005, at only 16 years and 143 days, before having such an impact that it prompted Arsenal to sign him in January 2006.

There can't be many players to have had a longer gap between spells at a club!

I think Manchester United felt as though they had the options they needed in central defence and did not feel as though they could get anyone better than the players they have already got.

They have let one defender in Chris Smalling go to Roma. He was not even training with the first-team squad. They have also got Marcos Rojo, who you can't see getting anywhere near the first team but will be unable to leave until January at the earliest.

If you look at what happened against Tottenham, you would think they need quite a few defenders, but United think that the defensive record they had last season proves they have got good players at the club already.

In case you are wondering what this is about, it is firstly a reference to an infamous tweet the club sent late on deadline day in 2014 where they told fans not to go to bed in anticipation of a signing which didn't come. Instead, they sold two players.

The fish and chips? Well, that is a bit trickier to explain. It would be fair to say the Rennes fans are not happy about Raphinha joining Leeds. And one of them got a bit creative in an expletive-ridden tweet, which ended with a suggestion that Leeds fans do something horrible to their own mother in "your fish and chip country".

Thomas Partey has been an influential figure at Atletico Madrid and, really, Arsenal are doing well to get him for that kind of fee [£45million].

I don't think [Atletico manager] Diego Simeone wanted him to go, but Mikel Arteta is building something at Arsenal and I think he understands the Spanish market. He also understands the kind of player he needs and I think that is why Arteta has gone for him.

  18. Is Cavani past his best?published at 22:16 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    So, Edinson CavanI then?

If Manchester United had signed the striker two or three years ago you would not have heard a dissenting voice. But in 2020 there are more than a few questioning if the Uruguayan is perhaps past his best.

The fact is that he has dabbled in dance more than he has competitive football in the past seven months. And if you're wondering what that is all about then you can find out by reading our feature on the striker following his move to Old Trafford.

Oh, and here is a list of his league games and goals, season by season, since his move to PSG...

What happened to the so called "cultural reset" at United? This is arguably the most incompetent window since Ferguson left. We signed one player all summer and then left it until the last day to sign three more. We dragged Sancho on for three months! If we were never paying the price, draw a line and move on to other targets early in the window. We've signed one player that will go into the first XI (Telles), and we're supposed to be trying to close the gap on Liverpool and City? Time will tell if Cavani etc will be decent signings, but where's the signs of a strategy? Shambolic isn't the word.

    Don, Manchester

  20. 'Partey is an intelligent central midfielder'published at 22:12 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

    Thomas ParteyImage source, Getty Images

Arsenal scouts had prepared big reports on Thomas Partey for a long while, he was the number one target but they left it until the end in case Atletico Madrid wanted to negotiate, they did not want to negotiate - it was the buyout clause or nothing.

Atletico are going to look at it like 'they took him, he's one of ours' but they are happy to get 50 million euros for somebody who's wage was the smallest of the whole squad. He was desperate to leave, tried to go to Tottenham when Mauricio Pochettino was in charge. That didn't happen but he was more than willing to take that step with Arsenal.

What are they getting? An intelligent central midfielder who has got a very good range of passing - short and long. He has the ability to pause and think and lift the head to see what is happening. He has a very powerful shot from outside the box and is totally committed to whatever the tactical cause is. Even though he is 27 there is room for improvement.
