Houssem Aouar is not moving to Arsenal from Lyon, but that is no surprise. He is another player linked heavily with a move to Arsenal but he told French TV last night that he wants to stay at Lyon.

We are just waiting for confirmation on Thomas Partey (to Arsenal) now. I was told by someone very close to the player a couple of hours ago that the deal was going to happen.

They have met the buyout clause of around £45million. It's just a question of waiting for that confirmation, which I think will happen.

  6. DONE DEAL - QPR sign Willockpublished at 20:44 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

It has been pretty quiet in the Championship but QPR have been quite active as they add Benfica forward Chris Willock to their squad.

Willock, brother of Arsenal midfielder Joe, spent time on loan at West Brom and Huddersfield last season.

Roma have been trying to sign Smalling on a permanent basis all summer. And Man Utd finally agree to sell him the day after conceding 6 goals at home due to a dreadful defensive performance. Very strange.

    John F, Watford fan.

Man Utd really need to give Teden Mengi a go in the first team at centre-back. A massive potential and, dare I say, the next Rio Ferdinand. He has pace, is good on the ball and has natural leadership at the back, which is somewhat missing. It's the perfect opportunity for him, and let's be honest, can it get any worse? Milan, Barnet

Everton have just signed Ben Godfrey for £20-25m who at Norwich City was developing nicely, has really good attributes but at times last season, switched off.

I think he'll go on to be a really good player but £25m on a developing player! When you look across, who is out there? Everybody throws Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly out there but how many top centre-halves are there? Not many.

  14. Chris Smalling leaves Man Utdpublished at 20:31 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

It is a sad way for a Manchester United career to end.

Chris Smalling has got his wish to join AS Roma after spending last season on loan.

The former England man ended up training on his own, which is a bit sad after 10 years and 323 appearances.

That just leaves David de Gea and Phil Jones in the current squad who have won a Premier League title at the club.

Manchester United are at the top of the tree, so if you're going to spend however many millions of pounds on transfers, you have to make sure that the player you are signing can perform at the top of the tree.

So, as well as Ollie Watkins did for Brentford, that isn't enough. You need him first to go to one of those bridge clubs between the Championship and the top of the Premier League.

Clubs like Manchester United need those clubs in the middle to take the risks on players for you. That's the way the transfer market has to work.

As much as Man Utd may have declined since the Fergie era, it's always clear on days like these just how big they remain as a club - fans and commentators of all allegiances just can't help but talk about them...constantly!

  20. Impact sub role for Walcott?published at 20:23 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

Carteret Analytics have been crunching the data on Theo Walcott and how he compares to Southampton's other attacking options.·

They say that Walcott will provide Southampton with game changer attributes similar to those of Stuart Armstrong and Moussa Djenepo, but will offer significantly less defensive attributes than both, suggesting the team will be weakened by his inclusion when not in possession of the ball.

The data analysis suggests he may be more effective as an impact substitution.
