  1. 'Traore signing is part of Man Utd's cultural reboot'published at 22:09 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Amad Traore is someone Manchester United have scouted for quite a long time. He is very inexperienced. He has been at Atalanta for a while but he came over from the Ivory Coast.

He is the kind of player that Manchester United have been building towards signing - a young player that they can develop.

I hesitate to use the words Cristiano Ronaldo but they got Ronaldo as a relatively young player, he was a little bit more experienced than Traore but he was equally as young.

That is what Manchester United are working towards, this ability to bring in players and develop them into world stars who play for Manchester United.

That is the cultural reboot of United, which the club said they were working towards in the wake of Jose Mourinho's departure. That is what this kind of signing is aimed at.

Trarore's signing is more in line (with the cultural reboot) than someone like Edinson Cavani.

  3. 'Cavani a gamble'published at 22:05 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

I think Edinson Cavani is a gamble. When he hasn't played a single game of football for seven months and the last two injuries he had were both soft tissue injuries, it's a panic buy.

Let's hope it works out for United because the Edinson Cavani of five-six years ago - unbelievable player.

  4. 'Exciting to see Cavani in Man Utd shirt'published at 22:02 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    John Bennett
    BBC World Service Sport

The way this move has happened and the timing will no doubt leave Manchester United fans asking more questions about the club’s recruitment strategy but focusing solely on the player, I think seeing Edinson Cavani in a Manchester United shirt is something to get excited about.

His quality is not in question - 341 goals and 65 assists in 556 club games speaks for itself. Last season was a disappointment but that seemed out of Cavani’s hands as he appeared to be pushed aside by PSG in the final year of his contract. Many PSG fans (and indeed Thiago Silva) were upset by the way he was treated. His father accused PSG of a lack of respect towards his son.

His attitude is a huge plus point too. Cavani is a very competitive person, works hard on and off the pitch, is highly respected and will be a positive influence on the likes of Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford, who surely can only learn from someone with Cavani’s experience.

The Uruguayan will also have something to prove after his difficult final year and difficult summer trying to find a new club. Can you imagine how motivated he will be when Manchester United meet PSG in the Champions League?

The one huge doubt, of course, is his age and his fitness. At 33 can he deliver the numbers he used to in a congested Premier League season? That’s the big question. But if United get him anywhere near to his best Cavani should be a huge asset after a very tough start to the campaign.

Edinson Cavani's goalscoring record is highly impressive.

He has scored 341 goals in 556 club games, including a club record 200 in 301 appearances for PSG.

The 33-year-old also has 50 goals in 116 caps for Uruguay.

Cavani will provide an experienced forward option for United and competition for younger forwards Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

It's possible that United's approach is simply that they're no longer willing to be held to ransom when either buying players for huge money (sancho) or selling players on the cheap, hence keeping their nerve until the last day. If that's true, I quite admire it. In a global pandemic, spending £100m on Sancho would have been vulgar. What's he done In an England shirt?

Thomas Partey will be a great signing for Arsenal. I was reading that Diego Simeone isn't happy because he wanted the pair - Lucas Torreira and Partey together.

For Arsenal they need that sort of player like Partey: a physical presence, he's very good on the ball, he plugs lots of gaps and with Dani Ceballos, they could form a real relationship in there.

Angus Robb: Jose's tactics are clear. Eliminate daft goals and this Spurs squad will score hatfuls. Kane, Son, Dele, Bergwijn, Lucas, Lamessi, Bale, Lo Celso, Ndombele, Vinicius - that's about two million possible striking combinations in Jose's front three.

I think whoever is in charge of getting signings over the line at Manchester United, never really had a clue what Borussia Dortmund were saying about Jadon Sancho. The deadline was going to be 10 August and the transfer fee was just over £100m and Man United went in with an opening bid of £80m, so straight away they are way off.

So Dortmund just kept saying 'this is the fee, this is the date and you need to match it'. They knew they had a dual on their hands because once he started playing again this season and is back up to speed, this time next year with a different market and different valuation, United will have to pay £120m for the kid.

I've got no idea how you can't get a deal over the line of that magnitude if you are Man United - one of the biggest clubs in the world. There are enough players in that United squad to generate a little bit of money - I'm talking £10-£15m - to make up the difference for the Sancho deal.

Daniel Cheng: Not bothered about Arsenal missing out on Aouar. If we get Partey he can play with Elneny or Xhaka and we can push Ceballos further forward in the no.10 role. Aouar would just be another luxury attacking wide player type signing we don't need.
