It's been absolutely tragic to see Jack Wilshere's promise, potential, and even his career completely evaporate due to injuries. One wonders where his future could lie; surely very few clubs would be willing to take a chance on him, and it feels like his body has already given way. It sounds cruel but you have to wonder if retirement beckons.

Terence Ford, Back of the Nest Podcast:

Like a silky Said Benrahma turn, the minutes of deadline day are slipping away and a deal is about as close as Michael Hector was to the Algerian last week before the Brentford forward scored.

No one is coming and no one is leaving Palace. At least not today.

Perhaps a further, and much needed, forward thinking addition will come from the domestic window, but for now Steve Parish's Soho offices are closed, the training ground likewise and Roy Hodgson has his feet up with a hot cup of cocoa.

  5. When can we sign players?published at 20:14 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

To clarify, this season there are two transfer windows, tonight at 2300 BST – and then 16 October at 1700 BST.

The latter window is between the Premier League and the EFL, so transfers can be made between clubs in the two leagues but NOT between two Premier League clubs.

It is worth noting that registration of 25-man squads for European competition has to be completed by 2300 BST on 6 October.

Effectively no player signing for a club after this time could play in Champions League or Europa League games, but they would be available for domestic competition.

United signing Traore, Pellistri and Kambwala brings United's signings of u19s players to north of £50million this summer, if rumours are to be believed, and more than 10 players. Very, very interesting. It harks back to Ferguson's days of bringing in worldwide talent like Rafael, Fabio, Pique and Rossi to complement the academy.

  8. 'Barkley takes pressure off Grealish'published at 20:11 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Micah Richards
Former Man City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Ross Barkley to Aston Villa is a masterstroke - and it went under the radar! No one really knew about it and the next minute he's at Villa. It was brilliant.

It does take the pressure off Jack Grealish a little bit as someone else who can dribble. The relationship between them on Instagram - as soon as they came in the dressing room they were hugging like they've been best mates for a long time and when you're with someone who you have a good rapport with off the pitch, on the pitch it's going to be even better.

It feels like Jack now has someone on the same level in the forward position. He creates so much but in that final third, he had no one finishing off the chances. Now he's got Barkley there, now he's got Ollie Watkins there. It's fantastic to see.

  9. 'A huge summer'published at 20:09 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Chelsea

    Ross Mooring, Chelsea Fancast:

In what has been a huge summer for the club in the transfer market, Chelsea shelled out more than £220m on Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell, Edouard Mendy and Thiago Silva (on a free) to improve a team that scored more goals last term than every other Premier League club, bar Liverpool and Manchester City.

Rumoured to be on the outs as recently as this week were both Callum Hudson-Odoi and Marcos Alonso. Despite the reports however, Hudson-Odoi is happy to stay currently and Lampard needs every defender he can get his hands on at the moment.

If Chelsea missed out on any one position, the need for a central defender and/or a defensive midfielder has already been highlighted. Declan Rice might tick all those boxes, but even Roman Abramovich's eyes probably water at spending £300m on new players in the space of three months.

Joe Wedgwood: The best Man Utd could do in these last hours is finally sell Pogba. To anyone. Literally anyone.

Victor Busschop: It baffles me why Ole hasn’t considered converting AWB to a centre back. It nullifies his attacking flaw, he’s a top 1 on 1 defender, has pace, he’s strong, he’s 6ft - taller than Puyol, who was also converted from a rb to a cb. And he’s what we’re crying out for.

Disappointed with City's transfer business this summer. We needed two centre-backs, but we also needed a replacement for Aguero and David Silva. I just feel we'll end up having a Kompany moment again, with Silva going and Aguero likely to go next summer.

West Ham are interested in taking Chelsea centre-back Fikayo Tomori on loan.

But it will depend on whether Chelsea decide to let him go and what they decide on Antonio Rudiger who has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Germany international Rudiger, 27, has already turned down a move to West Ham.

West Ham winger Felipe Anderson could also be loaned to Porto.

The Portuguese window closes on 25 October, but Porto would need to register the 27-year-old Brazilian by tomorrow if they want him to play in Champions League games this season.

Aston Villa have had the best transfer window of any team. I thought they looked at their squad and thought 'we definitely need a goalkeeper, striker and a couple more pinpointed positions.'

I think Ross Barkley is a brilliant signing in midfield. There's a tendency now to assume players that don't become automatic starters and captains at top six teams are, for some reason, not good enough to play for anybody else in the Premier League - so I'm delighted Barkley is proving that most of the players on the bench in the top six would get a game everywhere else.

Also, Barkley and Jack Grealish between them are press resistant, which I think will make Villa's midfield really interesting because they're both really good ball carriers. The art of dribbling has been lost a little bit because of the focus on passing, but what Grealish and Barkley do really well is carry the ball forward, and in a league so heavy on pressing, that's a really important trait.
