Chris & Micah suggesting no crowds shouldn't make a difference? Spurs going to Utd would have had a lot more pressure on them in front of a 75,000 crowd, especially after going a goal down. On the other side of the coin, United players would have put a much better effort in front of their own fans. I think the big players also need the adulation of their own fans in their own stadium and the away teams play with a lot less pressure.

Cavani is the new Zlatan - game changer.

    Will

Jamie might have a point about big players needing a crowd to play to. Can you imagine Zlatan relishing playing in an empty stadium?

Everton's pursuit of Roma's Robin Olsen is a very clear message to Jordan Pickford - improve or else.

Carlo Ancelotti publicly supported Pickford last week but it may be that yet another awful error in the win over Brighton on Saturday prompted a re-think.

In the longer term it would not surprise me if Ancelotti starts casting his net around for a more permanent long-term replacement for Pickford.

Arsenal to "re-sign" Gunnersaurus, then at the contract signing they will reveal that it is actually Partey inside the costume. Greatest signing reveal ever.

  4. 'Palace additions unlikely'published at 19:32 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Crystal Palace

Terence Ford, Back of the Nest Podcast:

The aim of this window was to bring down the average age of the squad and adding youngsters Nathan Ferguson from West Brom and Eberechi Eze from QPR has been a step in the right direction.

Goals were hard to come by last season and the hope is that Michy Batshuayi can repeat the success of his last loan spell with the club that saw him score six times.

Unfortunately, Palace were priced out of signing Rhian Brewster from Liverpool and as it stands, remain an attacking option short.

Fans hope that Said Benrahma from Brentford or Odsonne Edouard from Celtic might be added to the ranks and either would be signings that would be celebrated long into the South London night.

Sadly, with six unexpected points on the board and prices remaining high, it is unlikely that there will be any additions to the squad today.

  5. Olsen on his way?published at 19:31 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Negotiations are progressing between Everton and Roma to complete a loan deal for 30-year-old Sweden keeper Robin Olsen.

Everton made inquiries about Manchester United's Sergio Romero and Paulo Gazzaniga from Spurs but it is understood both clubs wanted a permanent deal whereas the Merseyside club preferred a loan move.

Hmmm, not heard any more about the Chris Smalling to Roma deal, but I have seen some Italian sources saying it is on.

United will move to a back five with Shaw playing centre-back and Telles left-back. That will also compensate for the lack of a right winger, allowing Greenwood, Martial, Rashford and Cavani to compete for the two striking positions.

    Dean

An 18-yr-old winger, 33-yr-old striker, 27-yr-old left-back with only one cap, blah blah blah.... I JUST WANT A DECENT CENTRE-BACK! The best news for me would be keeping Smalling and adding him back into the squad, that's how desperate it's got!

  11. 'Standard of defending has dropped'published at 19:22 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

    LiverpoolImage source, PA Media

The reason for the huge results this season is the standard of defending in the Premier League is awful - and also there has been some terrible goalkeeping.

You can't blame the fact that there's no crowd for Adrian and his horrific pass. You can't blame the no crowds for the goals that have gone in this season, Manchester United's defending: the Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw errors. We've seen Liverpool and Virgil van Dijk also defending poorly.

It's poor defending, not a lack of fans, simple as that. The standard of defending has dropped dramatically, I think, in the Premier League.

  13. 'Garcia more value to stay at Man City'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

There's been much discussion about Eric Garcia this afternoon and a potential move to Barcelona for the Manchester City defender.

Barcelona's last offer for Garcia was £5 million, plus £10m in variables.

Data analysts Carteret Analytic say Manchester City take the view that Garcia’s ‘value in use’ (essentially his Intrinsic Value) over the remaining year of his contract is more valuable to them than a derogatory ‘value in exchange’ offer from Barcelona.

According to Carteret Analytic, Garcia’s Intrinsic Value for Manchester City is £32.14m. The data analysts go on to say that even if you halved this because he is in the last year of his contract, his ‘value in use’ to Manchester City will still be least £16m.

JoinyBeans: Will Man Utd’s new left back be a good signing? Only time will Telles...

Brandon Rendall: Alex Telles - 'ready for the new challenge at Man Utd'. That will be some challenge the way United could be in a relegation battle if things carry on.

RegularJon: Wahoo - a full-back from Porto, the last one worked out great so I’m sure this one will...

  15. 'An overwhelming success'published at 19:07 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Everton

Dave Downie, The Blue Room Podcast:

For once, Everton’s business this window has been an overwhelming success. Abdoulaye Doucoure, Allan and James Rodriguez have all contributed heavily to an incredible start to the season.

A midfield that looked bereft of any quality or creativity now looks like one of the most efficient in the Premier League.

Ben Godfrey from Norwich brings much needed cover at centre back.

In regards to anything else, given the incredible start to the season, I think Farhad Moshiri may be tempted to give Carlo Ancelotti the funds for a surprise or two on deadline day.

The manager hinted their may be some movement in the attacking ranks given Moise Kean’s move to PSG, a striker or attacking forward would be most welcome.

  16. Worst and best window?published at 19:04 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

Analysts at Carteret advise a handul of Premier League clubs on how much a prospective signing would be worth to them, based on how much impact a player has on winning games of football.

They've given us a look at how they rate all Premier League signings this summer.

Southampton, Tottenham and Arsenal have had the best window so far, according to Carteret.

All three of those club's signings are considered to have a higher value than their transfer fees.

The worst value? Chelsea and West Brom.
