Luminol Nights: It seems clear & obvious to me that VAR offside decisions should be based on where the player’s feet are.

Aidan Mifsud: Can anybody explain to me why the directive to referees to give the attacking players the benefit of the doubt when it comes to offside has been completely forgotten since VAR?

Brighton are the ones asking questions. Lamptey gets in behind the Palace defence down the right but his low ball is behind a host of team-mates and is cleared.

I really don't know why he has not hit that earlier. Adam Lallana has slipped Neal Mauapy in lovely on to his right foot and he just opts to chop back inside. There are so many Crystal Palace bodies back and they get the block in. A missed opportunity for Brighton.

Webster gets his head to the corner first, which sets up Maupay for an overhead kick. He fluffs it but is offside anyway.

Kouyate returns but is not moving freely.

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Brighton

Maupay is denied again. He is found in the box by Lallana and cuts inside to buy himself a yard for the shot, but that allows Kouyate the time to dive in and block. The ball spins over for a corner, which allows Kouyate to get some treatment.

They'll have to defend the corner without him.

Tell you what, it is close. It is another of those that id decided by a fingernail's width.

We can debate this all day. The laws say offside is offside, no matter how tight, but where do you draw the line? Literally.

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Brighton

Batshuayi is denied a superb goal. He gets in behind the Brighton back line to latch on to a through-ball before rifling a shot into the roof of the net.

The flag is up, though. VAR will check it...

Standout player of the first half for me is Jairo Riedewald. Filling spaces and cutting out passes. Very good on the ball too. McArthur not far behind.

Brighton have played the better football but haven't been able to make clear cut chances.

Also, as a strange bit of info. Stephen Henderson the Palace keeper named on the bench watched most of the first half from the doorway leading onto the concourse of the stand and not in the area the rest of the subs are sitting. No idea why, but maybe as he's standing closer to the Palace GK he's giving him information?

Tariq Lamptey is so full-on, 100%, isn't he. He doesn't pull out of anything, whether it's a big six foot goalkeeper or not, he's not bothered. He went clattering into Vicente Guaita and really smashed him in the shin but he was up first, credit to him.

McArthur twisted awkwardly and needed a bit of treatment, but he's not easily broken, the midfielder, and will continue.

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Brighton

Oh, this is the closest Brighton have come to an equaliser. A lovely ball wide from Trossard gives March the space to send in a low cross that Lallana dummies and Maupay gathers, swivels and turns towards goal but without the pace to beat Guaita.

Looks like James McArthur has done himself some damage in that.

Brighton go direct, trying to find Lamptey in the Palace half with a long ball forward. He is just second best to the ball behind Guaita and takes a clattering off the keeper too. After a bit of time down, he gets himself back up.

Mark Hassall: General rule of thumb: if you're waving your hands in the air while falling over, instead if trying to use them to break your fall like a normal human reaction, it's not a foul.

It doesn't matter if his hand is on him. The question is has he done enough to pull him to the floor and the answer is no. Michy Batshuayi would be on his feet if he wanted to be.

[Stuart Attwell] has totally bought it. We want VAR in the game to make these types of incidents clear. It should be assisting the referee in identifying that.

For me, the video evidence is clear that there wasn't enough force from Lamptey to put Batshuayi down, so help the referee out or at least give him the option to look at the evidence on the screen.

    HT: Crystal Palace 1-0 Brighton

Brighton have had 11 touches in the opposition penalty area, compared with three for Crystal Palace.

And Palace had just one shot in that entire half, and it wasn't one they fashioned, unless you want to count Batshuayi's work as fashioning.

    100% conversion rate, though.

  19. 'A little bit like our old selves'published at 14:56 British Summer Time 18 October 2020

    FT: Sheff Utd 1-1 Fulham

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder speaking to MOTD: "Delighted to get a result, disappointed we didn't come in at half time upping the game.

"We were a little bit more like our old selves in the first half and had control of the game but we were not like our old selves in the second half. First half us, they dominated the second half.

"It is a bit of a battle at the moment, a bit of a grind but delighted to get something out of the game.

"I am not going to complain about the decision because we have talked about some that have gone against us this season so we have had a touch of luck today. We will take that and I think it is due."

On Rhian Brewster's performance: "Rhian has come into the football club to make us better and we are delighted he has come. Billy Sharp is one of the players at the top end of the pitch and he adds to the group. This is the evolution of the club we have to do.

"We are not in a situation where we can spend £400m on defenders, that is the competitions we are in. It is relentless and it is not just one of the top teams it is right the way through. We can't deal with those sorts of figures so we have to go a different way and the different way is the likes of Aaron Ramsdale and Brewster and a little springing of Billy Sharp."

  20. 'Hopefully this will kick us on to better things'published at 14:52 British Summer Time 18 October 2020

    FT: Sheff Utd 1-1 Fulham

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder: "I thought we were good in the first half. Second half they were in the ascendancy. We lost a bit of control in the second half and got a bit anxious which I could understand when you are after the first result of the season.

"Delighted we got it, still a lot to work on. We are not playing with that freedom and confidence we had because of the start to the season but small acorns and that. Hopefully it will kick us on to better things.

"I don't think desperation comes into it, more a word that is not a strong as that. Elementary mistakes, people giving balls away, cheap play. They are good players, they are just going through that bit of anxiety at the moment.

"It was a difficult one because we did not have any control of the game. The players need to clear their heads a little bit. They have done fantastically well to get into this position and they need to enjoy it as well. I was delighted with the first half, I felt we controlled it.

"We are in the Premier League way ahead of time but we were never not going to come into it. When the door opened a couple of years ago we were going to jump into it. We were just lacking that bit of belief and hopefully we will kick on.

"We want to be in the Premier League but we understand as well it is tough. Our position last year will have raised people's hopes around here but I knew it was going to be difficult. When you don't get the start you want to have it makes it a bit difficult for us."
