  1. 'This team is going in the right direction'published at 14:50 British Summer Time 18 October 2020

    FT: Sheff Utd 1-1 Fulham

    Fulham

Fulham boss Scott Parker, speaking to MOTD: “I thought in the second half performance we were exceptional.

"In the first half we came with a bit of plan, we needed to tinker things at half time and the players responded very well. Second half I saw a dynamic team, a team that could create chances and I was pleased overall in that sense.

“Still plenty of learning and plenty of improvement to do. A young team with young players coming in and making their debuts. Overall pleased.

“Playing against a very well drilled side here and their formation can cause you problems. We tried to nullify their threat. On the counter attacking side I thought we looked deadly. Pleased with that but probably need to be a bit more clinical in this moments.

“I was very pleased. The team is going in the right direction, not just today. The last performance as well was very pleasing. From where we were in the first three games where we had our struggles we appear to be coming out of that and pushing in the right direction.

On Mitrovic missing a penalty: “It was painful for him but he has earned the right. Today wasn’t his day but he has scored and assisted a lot of goals. This is someone we owe a lot to. He will dust himself down and go again."

  2. 'Should have taken three points'published at 14:48 British Summer Time 18 October 2020

    FT: Sheffield United 1-1 Fulham

    Fulham

Ademola Lookman talking to BBC Sport: “Disappointed really, I thought we should have taken three points from the game but it’s done now and we go on to the next one.

“The gaffer wanted us to play a lot quicker [in the second half], especially in the opposition’s half and that’s what we tried to do but unfortunately we couldn’t get the three points.”

On his goal: “It doesn’t really matter as we didn’t get the three points. I’m just disappointed really. I felt in the second half, we controlled the game a lot more and should have scored more than one. Important thing is we’re creating chances.

“We all believe we can do great things this season. We expect good things to come in the near future.”

  4. HALF-TIMEpublished at 45 mins

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Brighton

For the neutral, probably the worst thing that could have happened is Palace scoring first.

Their ability to snuff out an opponent and manage a lead has stripped this game of it's early promise.

Palace won't care, though. As for Brighton, it is up to them to make something happen.

  5. 'I would like to see Brighton be a bit more direct'published at 14:44 British Summer Time 18 October 2020

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Brighton

    Matthew Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

You have to move the ball quickly, at times, and I'm not sure if that is something Brighton have done particularly well this season. They certainly haven't done it well enough in this game.

If you are going to find that chink in the armour it is when that turnover happens, you have to play it quickly.

Brighton are very controlled, very composed in possession but I would like to see them get forward and be a bit more direct a bit quicker.

  6. YELLOW CARDpublished at 43 mins

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Brighton

Bissouma takes one for the team, tripping Schlupp to prevent the Palace man breaking following the clearance of a poor Albion free-kick.

Palace are a bit of a nightmare to play against when they get their noses ahead. Pretty much 10 men behind the ball, stopping anything passing. It's not always pretty but it is very effective.

Had enough of watching "Premier" League football. Summarisers call it as "went down easily...". Viewing public call it "blatant cheating....", end of.

VAR needs to be more like TMO in rugby. TMO is transparent because you are able to hear the referees talk to the TMO and it is clear and accurate. VAR is not transparent and has caused more questions than answered by being opaque.

I'm happy to be educated on the matter but does the word contact appear in the laws/rules of the game when it comes to deciding if a foul has been committed?

OK, I'm making a retraction. I initially said Lamptey took Batshuayi down for the penalty. But he didn't. The striker took complete advantage of the lightest of contact.

I've no excuse, I was wrong. By extension then, I reckon the ref got it wrong. And VAR, which poses bigger questions.

Jamie: Very, very soft penalty, but the first error is with the referee for giving it. In a world without VAR that would have still been a penalty!

JavelBleach: The problem is not VAR, or even the refs. The fundamental problem is the actual concept of the penalty. You have an infinite range of possible fouls & transgressions resulting in a binary penalty/no penalty decision. Ban the peno and bring back the direct free kick.

Dan Burn has to take evasive action, sticking a boot out to divert the ball behind after Palace swing a free-kick into the box. The resulting corner is taken short but Palace are unable to fashion anything from it.

Abdhakeem Olayiwola: How can that be a penalty with VAR. Football is a contact game. It is an absolute disgrace. I thought VAR was to correct referee.

Richard Evans: You get penalties for breathing these days. Forget the actual games just have shootouts. Pathetic.

Another chance for Maupay - much tougher one, though. March returns a deep cross from Lamptey first time on the volley and the ball essentially hits Maupay, who tries to steer the ball on target but can only divert it over.

  15. Paying the penaltypublished at 14:26 British Summer Time 18 October 2020

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Brighton

    • Since the start of the 2017-18 season, only Arsenal (19) and Watford (18) have conceded more goals from the penalty spot in the Premier League than Brighton (16).
    • Crystal Palace have converted each of their last 15 penalties in the Premier League.
    • Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha has scored more goals against Brighton in all competitions than he has any other opponent (7).
    • After saving two of his first three Premier League penalties faced, Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan has conceded each of the last 13 since.

The fact that it is a penalty for me is a problem. It's a poor choice from the referee, it's a poor decision. It can't be that easy that the centre-forward leans into you while you are up against him.

Yes, Lamptey's arm was up, but it wasn't pulling him over. He's leaned into him, Michy Batshuayi, bought the penalty and even with VAR it's been given.

I just find that hard to believe. It shouldn't be a penalty in my opinion.

'Professional' football makes me laugh: moaned like hell for introduction of VAR, now moans like hell that it's too accurate. Conclusion: players/managers/fans just want something else to blame for their failure to win a football match.

    Jim, Preston

VAR is not the issue, the people using VAR and other referees on the pitch are the issue. A bad workman blames his tools and all that... The standard of refereeing is so poor and that's just extended by their new toy that they can't use properly.

My first instinct was no penalty. I don't think there was a lot of contact. But it was a cool penalty. Lovely from Zaha.
