How does James manage to get a game?

    Derek in Dundee

Who'd have thought 2 teams so good at going forward and so inept at defending would have produced a game as stale as this

    John in Leeds

It's coming down in stair- rods outside which would normally ensure the dog remains rooted to his blanket but we are looking at each other thinking come on let's go it's got to be better than this.

Well played Christian Pulisic! The man was flying pre-FA Cup final injury and he could be getting back there. He nicks the ball off Fred in midfield, charges straight at the United goal and hits a low shot which takes a deflection and squirms wide.

    Manchester United 0-0 Chelsea

Manchester United had their first shot in the 25th min (Maguire), the longest they've waited for their first attempt in a PL home game since September 2019 (Andreas Pereira v Arsenal).

Here we go, now we're talking. A proper. full-blooded shot on goal as Bruno Fernandes winds up from 25 yards and smacks it straight at Edouard Mendy.

Chelsea then come down the other end and Timo Werner threatens before Christian Pulisic hits a shot which David de Gea saves easily.

    Much, much better.

United now move the ball with precision and pace and Scott McTominay has a shot well charged down. Bruno Fernandes is holding his face, nothing in that, as Edouard Mendy then passes the ball clean out of play for a corner!

    That's my fault.

I'm counting that as a shot! Chelsea have a free-kick wide on the left, Reece James looks up and, with everyone expecting a cross, he hits it towards the near post.

David de Gea reacts well though to pouch it. Signs of life though, belatedly.

This game is so boring... somebody wake me up when they decide to play football

You can tell this is two managers under pressure to get a result. Cagey is an understatement.

ALMOST something to report! Ben Chilwell for once plays a progressive pass and it's a cracker, over the top into Kai Havertz's path. He looks for Timo Werner in behind the United backline but he can't quite connect.

    Better though.

The most interesting thing that has happened so far at Old Trafford is that I have worked out there is an eight-second delay between something happening in front of me on the pitch and it appearing on the TV screen next to me.

Let's try and be positive. Edouard Mendy has been very good with the ball at his feet in the Chelsea goal so far. Playing like a fourth centre-half at times.

I understand Ajax had 45 shots in their 13-0 win against VVV-Venlo in the Eredivisie today, so one every two minutes. One would do nicely in this game. Who is going to kick us off fellas?

Rayan Mount: This has 0-0 written all over it. Both teams keeping it safe

Our tactics is basically a long ball up to Werner to see if he can get on the end, we need more than that

United send everyone back for the corner, two banks of five across the penalty area, and they manage to clear. Still we await a shot on goal.

Excellent shout Lucas! I like that thinking. A team gets in the penalty area of the other's and Chelsea win a corner. Maybe we can kick it up a notch.

I'm not so sure you do wish you were there tonight James. If you love a backwards pass from midfield to a centre-back then maybe.

Things can only get better, as they say.

It's pelting down in Manchester but I imagine James isn't the only football fan feeling like this this weekend...

James: Absolutely chucking it down and can see I would be cold and soaking wet in my seat at Old Trafford. I wish I was there.
